BINDING THE QUILT

BINDING THE QUILT

-

15

Take the two strips from step 11 and the white strips for binding. Carefully unpick the white pleated strips from the binding and replace with strips of white unpleated fabric.

16

Unpick the top cream fabric strips and replace one side with the cream 80in strip, and the other side with the pink 10in strip.

17

Repeat with the bottom light grey fabric strips, replacing one with the light grey 80in strip, and the second with the 10in strip. Press each strip in half lengthwise.

18

Attach one binding to the left side of the quilt, taking care to match up the stripes, leaving a few inches at each end unsewn (Fig F).

20

Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place, leaving the bottom edge unstitched.

MAKING THE TASSELS

21

Wrap half a skein of embroidery thread around a 2in piece of card thirty six times, and cut off the excess (Fig G). Slip a 10in length of grey yarn under the top and tie in place (Fig H). Remove the card and tie the yarn again to tighten (Fig I). Snip the thread at the bottom (Fig J). 22

Tie another length of yarn around the top, five or six times (Fig K). Bury the ends using a needle and trim the ends (Fig L). Repeat to make a total of twenty four tassels.

ATTACHING THE TASSELS

23

Use pins to mark 3in intervals along the bottom edge of the quilt. Mark along the centre of the binding strip at these 3in intervals, using a removable fabric marker (Fig M).

24

Use a needle to thread both ends of the tassel tie separately through the binding from the front to the back, either side of the mark (Fig N) and knot on the reverse (Fig O). Neatly trim the ends of the thread.

25

Repeat step 24 to attach the remaining tassels. Slip stitch the bottom of the binding to the back of the quilt to finish (Fig P).
