SEWING THE STRIPED BLOCKS

Sew two cream 5¾in x WOF strips to either side of a pink 2in x WOF strip along the long edges. Press seams towards the darker fabric. This block will be used in row 2 of the quilt.

CONTRASTING COLOURS MAKE THE SHARP LINES IN THIS PRECISE PATTERN REALLY POP

8

Repeat step 7 to make striped blocks, using the following fabric strips:

■ Row 3: two yellow 5¾in x WOF strips and one navy 2in x WOF strip.

■ Row 7: two cream 5¾in x WOF strips and one yellow 2in x WOF strip.

9

To make the row 5 striped block, use three pink 5½in x WOF strips and two cream 2in x WOF strips. Sew together as in step 7, then add the second cream strip to the bottom, followed by the last pink strip.

PIECING THE ROWS

10

Work through piecing the rows one at a time, referring to the Layout Diagram to ensure you cut the angles of the strips in the correct direction. Because of the nature of piecing angles, some rows will be slightly longer than others. Wait to trim your rows once they are pieced into the quilt top, to ensure you can match the angles across the rows.

11

To piece row 1, take the 6½in x 30¾in navy strip and 6½in x 43in aqua strip. Trim the right hand edge of the navy strip, referring to the box out instructions, with the diagonal edge running from the bottom right corner. Trim the left edge of the aqua strip with the diagonal edge running from the top left corner. Join the two strips together.

12

Trim the right edge of the aqua strip in row 1, with the diagonal edge running from the top right corner. Trim the left edge of the yellow 6½in x 12¾in strip, with the diagonal edge running from the bottom left corner. Join to the navy/aqua strip to complete row 1.

13

Repeat step 12 to piece rows 4, 6 and

8, using the following pieces. Take care to check the Layout Diagram to ensure you cut the diagonals in the correct directions.

■ Row 4: aqua 6½in x 36¾in strip and cream 6½in x 42¾in strip.

■ Row 6: yellow 6½in x 42¾in strip and navy 6½in x 36¾in strip.

■ Row 8: pink 6½in x 36¾in strip and yellow 6½in x 42¾in strip.

14

To piece row 2, join the 12½in x 31in cream strip to the left of the cream and pink striped block. Press the seam toward the solid strip.

15

To piece row 3, take the yellow 12½in x 12¾in strip and pink 12½in x 36¾in

strips. Trim the angled edges and join as before. Join the yellow and navy striped block to the left edge of the strip.

16

To piece row 5, join the navy 18½in x 30¾in strip and pink 18½in x 18¾in strips, as before. Then join the pink striped block to the right edge.

17

To piece row 7, join the 12½in x 12¾in cream strip to the 12½in x 36¾in aqua strip, as before. Then join the cream and yellow striped block to the left edge.

18

Sew the rows together, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement. Carefully align the diagonal seams across rows 3–5 and 7– 8. Square up the quilt top to 72½in wide.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

19

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.

20

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

21

Quilt as desired. Paula quilted simple straight lines approx. ½in apart using matching thread. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

22

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

23

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.
