Mix and match floral prints and Flying Geese to make a piece of wall art to brighten up your home

CUTTING OUT

1 From the background fabric cut:

■ Twenty (20) 2¼in squares.

■ Two (2) 4in squares.

■ Two (2) 3in x 7½in rectangles.

■ Two (2) 5½in x 17¾in rectangles.

PIECING THE WALL ART

2 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2¼in square.

3 Position one square RST at the end of a feature fabric 4in x 2¼in rectangle. Sew along the marked line, trim ¼in from the line and press open. Repeat at the other end of the rectangle to complete one Flying Geese unit (Fig 1). Make ten Flying Geese units.

4 Sew the Flying Geese in two rows of five, all pointing downwards. Sew a matching 4in square at the bottom of each row (Fig 2).

5 Sew the two rows together along their long edges, being careful to orient the Flying Geese to point in opposite directions. Sew the 3in x 7½in rectangles to the top and bottom. Then sew the 5½in x 17¾in rectangles to either side (Fig 3).

FINISHING

6 Layer the pieced top over the lining fabric, wrong sides together and baste.

7 Place the centre of the embroidery hoop on your work surface with the quilt on top. Press the outer ring over the top, adjusting as necessary to centre the design. Tighten the hoop to secure it in place.

8 Trim any excess fabric around the edge of the hoop, leaving approx. 2in all the way around. With the hoop face down, work a running stitch through all layers using a strong thread. Pull up the stitches to gather the fabric around the back of the hoop and knot off to finish.
