■ Two (2) 6in squares.

2 From Fabric B cut:

■ Three (3) 6in squares.

3 From Fabric C cut:

■ Three (3) 6in squares.

■ Three (3) 2½in x WOF strips for the binding.

4 From Fabric D cut:

■ Three (3) 6in squares.

■ Two (2) 3in x 6in strips for the hanging loops.

5 From Fabric E cut:

6 From the background fabric cut:

■ Seven (7) 6in squares.

■ Twelve (12) 2½in squares.

PIECING THE HSTS

7 Place a Fabric A and Fabric B 6in square RST. On the reverse of one square, draw diagonal lines from corner to corner. Sew ¼in either side of each diagonal line, then cut across the drawn lines, as well as down the centre vertically and horizontally, to yield eight HSTs (Fig 1). Trim each HST to 2½in square.

8 Repeat step 7 to make HSTs in the following combinations:

■ Fabric A/background: eight (8) HSTs.

■ Fabric A/E: eight (8) HSTs.

■ Fabric B/background: sixteen (16) HSTs.

■ Fabric B/C: eight (8) HSTs.

■ Fabric C/background: eight (8) HSTs.

■ Fabric C/D: eight (8) HSTs.

■ Fabric D/background: eight (8) HSTs.

■ Fabric D/E: eight (8) HSTs.

■ Fabric E/background: sixteen (16) HSTs.

9 Referring to the Layout Diagram for placement, arrange your HSTs and remaining background squares in ten rows of ten. Sew together in rows, pressing the seams in each row to the side, alternating the direction in each row so that they nest together. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

10 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

11 Quilt as desired. Lorna quilted straight lines diagonally across the quilt. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

12 Take your two Fabric D 3in x 6in strips and press under both long edges by in. Topstitch in place. Fold the strips in half, bringing the raw edges together. Align the raw edges with the top of the quilt back, 2in from each side. Pin or baste in place.

13 Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

14 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, securing the hanging loops and creating a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding to the back and hand stitch in place.
