PIECING THE BLOCKS

6

Mark a diagonal line from corner-tocorner on the reverse of each background fabric square and all 1½in petal squares.

7

Add Corner-square Triangles (CSTs) to a 4½in petal square, using the following method. Place one background

REPEATS OF THE SAME BLOCK MAKE FOR A BOLD DESIGN AND A RELAXING SEWING SESSION

1½in square in the corner of one 4½in petal square. Sew along the marked line and trim off the excess, leaving a ¼in seam allowance. Press the corner open. Repeat with a second background 1½in square on an adjacent corner to make one petal unit (Fig 1).

8

Repeat step 7 with the remaining background 1½in squares and petal squares to yield a total of one hundred and twenty petal units.

9

Add a background 2½in CST to the bottom left corner of a 4½in leaf square. Repeat, adding a second background CST to the opposite corner to make one leaf unit (Fig 2). 10

Repeat step 9 with the remaining background 2½in squares and leaf squares to yield a total of one hundred and twenty leaf units.

11

Add 1½in petal CSTs to all four corners of a flower centre square, ensuring that all four corners are the same colour (Fig 3). Repeat with the flower centre squares to yield a total of thirty flower centre units.

12

Arrange four petal units, four leaf units and one centre unit into three rows of three. Sew the units together, then sew the rows together to complete one block (Fig 4). Repeat to make a total of thirty blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

13

Arrange the blocks into six rows of five, ensuring an even balance of colours and referring to the photography for placement. Join the blocks into rows, inserting a background 2½in x 12½in strip in between each block, as well as at the beginning and end of each row. Press the seams towards the background strips.

14

Sew the fourteen background 2½in x WOF strips in pairs along the short edges, to create seven sashing strips.

15

Sew the rows together, inserting a sashing strip in between each row, and at the top and bottom. Press the seams towards the sashing strips and trim the ends even with the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

16

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.

17

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the three quilt layers together using your preferred method.

18

Quilt as desired. Kristina quilted a swirling freemotion pattern to tie in with the softness of the florals. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

19

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

20

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.

PIECING THE CUSHION TOP

7

Follow steps 6–12 of the quilt instructions, making four petal units, four leaf units and one flower centre unit. Sew into one block.

8

Sew the 3½in x 12½in background strips to either side of the block. Then sew the 3½in x 19½in strips to the top and bottom. Press seams towards the background strips.

ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION

9

Layer the completed quilt block, batting and lining pieces to make a quilt sandwich. Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim to 18in square, centring the flower.

10

Take one backing rectangle and press under ¼in twice to the wrong side on one long edge, enclosing the raw edge. Topstitch in place.

11

Place the quilted cushion front face down on the work surface. Place the envelope back pieces right sides up on top of the quilted cushion, aligning the raw edges of the two envelope back pieces with the outer edges of the quilted piece. The topstitched edges should overlap in the middle. Secure the envelope back pieces in place with pins.

12

Baste the envelope back pieces to the quilted cushion piece, sewing along all four sides 1/8in away from the edge.

13

Join the binding strips together end-to-end with a diagonal seam. Press the seam open, fold the binding strips in half length-wise, WST, and press. Sew the binding onto the front of the cushion cover with a ¼in seam allowance and hand stitch to the back.
