14

Repeat step 13 with your remaining Fabric L 2½in squares to make blocks with the following borders:

■ Fabric C borders: two blocks.

■ Fabric F borders: four blocks.

■ Fabric H borders: two blocks.

■ Fabric J borders: four blocks.

PIECING THE ROWS: ROW ONE

15

Sew the following pieces into one row, joining along the 4½in edges, referring to the Layout Diagram for fabric placement.

■ One (1) Fabric H 4¼in x 4½in piece.

■ One (1) Fabric A 6¾in x 4½in piece.

ROWS TWO, FOUR, SIX AND NINE

16

To piece row two, join Fabric L 3½in x

4¼in and 3½in x 6¾in pieces to either side of a square block. Join another square block to the end of the longer Fabric L piece. Then join a 3½in x 22½in Fabric L piece, a third square block, and a

3½in x 19½in Fabric L piece in the above order. Refer to the Layout Diagram for placement of the square blocks.

17

Repeat step 16 to piece rows four, six, and nine, again referring to the Layout Diagram for square block placement.

ROW THREE

18

Join one Fabric I 3in x 4in piece and one Fabric G 3in x 5¼in piece along the short sides. Join a Fabric C 4¼in x 8¾in piece to the left side (Fig 2). Join one Fabric D 8¾in x 12¾in piece to one Fabric A 8¾in x 10¼in piece, to form the centre section.

19

Join a Fabric K 5¼in x 3in piece to the left side of a Fabric F 4in x 3in piece. Then sew a Fabric K 7½in x 3in piece to the right side. Repeat to make a second joined strip. Join a Fabric A 7½in x 3in piece to the left side of a Fabric H 4in x 3in piece. Then sew a Fabric A 5¼in x 3in piece to the right side.

20

Join the three strips from step 19 together along the long edges. Sew a Fabric A 4¼in x 8in piece to the left side of the unit. Then sew a Fabric A 19½in x 1¼in strip to the bottom (Fig 3).

21

Sew the three units from steps 18–20, a Fabric A 4¼in x 8¾in piece and three Fabric L 3½in x 8¾in pieces in one row, referring to the Layout Diagram.

ROW FIVE

22

To complete the centre section, join a Fabric C 8¼in x 9½in piece, a Fabric B

7in x 9½in piece and a Fabric A 8¼in x 9½in piece along the long edges (Fig 4).

23

To complete the right section, join a Fabric I 7in x 9½in piece, a Fabric A

3½in x 9½in piece, a Fabric D 7in x 9½in piece and a Fabric C 3½in x 9½in piece along the long edges (Fig 5).

24

Sew the pieced units from steps

22–23 with three Fabric L 3½in x

9½in pieces, a Fabric B 4¼in x 9½in piece and a Fabric H 6¾in x 9½in piece, into one row referring to the Layout Diagram.

ROW SEVEN

25

To piece the left section, join a Fabric A 3½in x 5½in piece to the top of a Fabric K 3½in square. Also join a Fabric A

3¾in x 5¼in piece to the bottom of a Fabric G 3¾in square. Then join these two units together (Fig 6). 26

To piece the centre section, join two Fabric A 3½in squares with a Fabric K and Fabric F 3½in square into one long strip. Then join a Fabric E 10½in x 3½in strip to the right end. Sew Fabric H 22½in x 3½in and Fabric A 22½in x 2½in strips to the bottom (Fig 7).

27

Sew a Fabric G 5¼in x 3in piece to the left side of a Fabric D 4in x 3in piece. Sew a Fabric A 4¼in x 8¾in piece on top, then join a Fabric A 3in x 6¾in piece to the right side. Also sew a Fabric D 4in x 3in piece to the left side of a Fabric I 5¼in x

3in piece. Then join a Fabric K 8¾in x 4¼in strip to the bottom. Join the two pieced units together, then sew a Fabric C 19½in x 2¼in strip to the bottom (Fig 8).

32

Sew a Fabric B 16½in x 5½in piece to the left side of a Fabric I 6½in x 5½in piece. Then sew a Fabric L 22½in x 3½in strip to the bottom, and a Fabric A 22½in x 4½in strip to the bottom of that (Fig 9).

33

Join a Fabric E 7in x 6in piece to the top of a Fabric D 7in square. Then join a Fabric B 13in x 12½in piece to the left side (Fig 10).

34

Referring to the Layout Diagram, sew the pieced units into a row, along with three Fabric L 30½in x 12½in pieces.

ASSEMBLING THE ROWS

35

Lay the rows out in number order, starting with row 1 at the top and row

10 at the bottom. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

36

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.

37

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the three quilt layers together using your preferred method.

38

Quilt as desired. Art Gallery Fabrics quilted a swirling freemotion design in variegated thread, to stand out against the variety of prints. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

39

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press. Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.
