MAKING THE CANDY BLOCK

6

Pair a Fabric A and D 3in square RST. Draw a diagonal line on the back of one square. Sew ¼in from either side of the line and trim along the line. Press the two HSTs open, but don’t trim (Fig 1).

7

Pair the two HSTs RST, making sure alternate colours are facing. Draw a diagonal line perpendicular to the seam on the back of one square. Stitch ¼in from either side of the drawn line, cut along the line and trim each QST to 2in square (Fig 2).

8

Repeat steps 6–7, making two Fabric B/D and two Fabric C/D QSTs. Arrange the QSTs with one Fabric A, B and C 2in square. Sew in a nine-patch formation (Fig 3).

MAKING THE WINDMILL BLOCK

9

Draw a diagonal on the reverse of eight Fabric B 2in squares. Place two in opposite corners of a Fabric D 3½in square, RST, overlapping in the centre. Sew ¼in from the diagonal line either side (Fig 4).

10

Cut along the marked line to make two units, press open. Place another Fabric B square RST on one of the units, and sew ¼in from each side of the line (Fig 5). Repeat with remaining unit and a Fabric B square. Cut along the diagonal of each square and press open for four Flying Geese units. Trim each to 15/ 8in x 2¾in. Repeat steps 9–10 to make four Fabric B/E Flying Geese units.

11

Arrange the Flying Geese as shown. Sew together in pairs. Then join the pairs in a four-patch formation (Fig 6).

MAKING THE MUG RUG

12

Layer each mug rug with a batting and Fabric A square and baste together in a quilt sandwich. Quilt as desired. Trim away excess batting and backing fabric.

13

Use the 2½in x 25in strips to bind each mug rug as you would a quilt.
