PREPARATION

14

Refer to the Layout Diagram as you piece your blocks, for colour combinations for each one. Press seams to one side in each block, pressing in alternate directions, so the seams will nest when sewing the blocks together.

PIECING BLOCK ONE

15

To piece block one, take one Template Z and one Template X piece. Fold in half to mark the centre of each curve (Fig A). Place the pieces RST, with the Template Z piece on top, pinning at the centre creases (Fig B). Match the corners and pin in place, then ease the fabric between these points and pin along the curve (Fig C).

16

Sew slowly along the curve, pivoting with the needle down every few stitches. Remove the pins as you go, being careful not to sew over them. Press the seam to one side (Fig D).

17

Repeat steps 15–16 with the Template Z and X pieces to make seventeen blocks. Note, you will have nineteen of each template remaining, which will be used in block three.

PIECING BLOCK TWO

18

Repeat steps 15–16 using Template Y and W pieces. Make eighteen of block three. Note, you will have nineteen Template W pieces remaining, which will be used in block three.

PIECING BLOCK THREE

19

Repeat steps 15–16 with one set of Template Z and X pieces. Trim the pieced unit using Template Y (Fig E).

20

Repeat steps 15–16 to add one Template W piece to the pieced unit from the last step, to complete block three (Fig F). Make nineteen block three.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

21

Lay the blocks out in nine rows of eight, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement. Sew the blocks together in pairs, nesting seams, then sew the pairs together to create the rows. Press seams to one side in alternating directions for each row. Join the rows together to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING & FINISHING

22

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

23

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the three quilt layers together using your preferred method.

24

Quilt as desired. Shannon has used

1in straight lines running side-toside. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

25

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, WST, and press.

26

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
