PIECING THE CENTRE BLOCK

10

Foundation Paper Piece Template A as follows. Place the Fabric C 10½in x 1¾in rectangle against the back of the template, covering Section 1 (Fig A). Make sure the fabric is overlapping the template lines by ¼in. Pin in place.

11

Place a Fabric B 10½in x 1¾in rectangle on top, matching up the edges on the sides where the pieces will be joined. Pin in place. Turn the template over to the printed side and stitch along the marked line between Sections 1 and 2, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam to keep your stitches in place (Fig B). Fold the template back, turn the work to the fabric side and press open (Fig C).

12

Repeat step 11 with a second Fabric B

10½in x 1¾in piece to cover the whole of Section 3 (Figs D and E). 13

Repeat steps 10–12 to make a total of four Template A units. Trim along the outer dashed line, carefully tear away the paper and set aside.

14

Cut two Fabric E 8in squares diagonally, from corner to corner, to yield a total of four triangles. Cut two Fabric E 6¼in squares along both diagonals, to yield a total of eight triangles (Fig F).

15

Sew two of the smaller triangles to either side of a Fabric D 4in square (Figs G, H and I). Press seams away from the square and trim the dog ears. Repeat to make a total of four triangle units. Set aside.

16

Sew a Fabric C 10 in x 4in rectangle to one side of a pieced Template A unit. Join one of the large Fabric E triangles from step 14 (Fig J). Trim the dog ears and repeat to make a total of four units.

17

Position the Fabric A 10 in square, and your pieced units from steps 15 and 16 as pictured above in Fig K. Sew into diagonal rows, pressing the seams in the corner rows towards the triangles, and the seams in the centre row towards the square. Sew the rows together and press the seams open (Fig L).

PIECING BORDER ONE

18

Sew a Fabric D 6 in square to either end of a Fabric F 6 in x 24 in rectangle. Press seams away from the squares. Repeat to make a second border strip. Sew a Fabric F 6 in x 24 in rectangle to either side of the centre block, press seams away from the centre. Join the pieced border strips to the top and bottom (Fig M).

PIECING BORDER TWO

19

Join a Fabric E 1 in x 3 in rectangle either side of a Fabric G 1 in x 3 in rectangle, along the long sides (Fig N). Press seams outwards. Repeat to make a total of twenty six stripe squares.

20

Sew six of the pieced squares from step 19 with six Fabric E 3 in squares, alternating the squares. Make four of these strips. Set two of these strips aside for later. Sew one more pieced and plain square to the ends of the other two strips, referring to the photography for orientation. Sew the shorter strips to the sides of the quilt, press the seams, and join the longer strips to the top and bottom.

PIECING BORDER THREE

21

Foundation Paper Piece Template B, as outlined in the instructions for steps

10–13. Use a Fabric A 3in x 8in rectangle to cover Section 1, a Fabric G 3in x 8 in rectangle to cover Section 2, and Fabric I

3 in x 7 in rectangles to cover Sections

3 and 4 (Figs O–V).

22

Repeat step 21 to make a total of sixteen corner FPP units. Sew the units together as a four-patch to make four corner blocks, referring to Fig W for placement. Press the seams open. Join a corner block to each short end of two Fabric H 42 in x 10 in rectangles, pressing seams inwards.

23

Sew a Fabric H 42 in x 10 in rectangle to either side of the quilt top, pressing seams outwards. Join the border strips from step 22 to the top and the bottom.

PIECING BORDER FOUR

24 in

Join Fabric B, D and G 6 in x 2 rectangles with three Fabric E rectangles into a strip, as shown in Fig X. Repeat to make a total of twenty of these stripe units. Sew these units into four sets of five, and join a Fabric E 6 in x 2 in rectangle to the Fabric D end of the rows.

25

Sew a Fabric C 6 in square to the ends of two of the border strips, pressing seams inwards. Join the two shorter borders to the sides of the quilt top, pressing seams outwards. Join the longer borders to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

26

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

27

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

28

Quilt as desired. Lucy quilted a grid of straight lines with Aurifil 40wt thread in colour #2205. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

29

Sew the binding strips together end-to- end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press. Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
