FABRICS USED

Print fabrics are all from the Quantum collection by Giucy Giuce for Andover.

CUTTING OUT

1

Arrange your prints in rainbow order, numbering from 1–20. Number 1 will be the top left corner heart. From each print cut:

■ One (1) 6½in x 9½in piece.

■ Two (2) 2½in x 22in strips (you will need a third strip for fabrics 7 and 20).

2

Subcut the print 2½in strips into the following:

■ Fabrics 1, 6, 8 and 19: sixteen (16) 2½in squares each.

■ Fabrics 2 and 5: fourteen (14) 2½in squares each.

■ Fabrics 3, 4, 11 and 16: ten (10) 2½in squares each.

■ Fabrics 7 and 20: eighteen (18)

2½in squares each.

■ Fabrics 9, 13, 14 and 18: thirteen

(13) 2½in squares each.

■ Fabrics 10, 12, 15 and 17: eleven

(11) 2½in squares each.

3

From the background fabric cut:

■ Five (5) 6½in x WOF strips. Subcut twenty (20) 6½in x 9½in rectangles.

■ Twenty (20) 2½in x WOF strips. Subcut thirteen of the strips into four (4) 3in x

2½in strips, four (4) 5½in x 2½in strips, one (1) 6in x 2½in strip, four (4) 8in x

2½in strips, twenty (20) 10in x 2½in strips, two (2) 10½in x 2½in strips, one

(1) 11in x 2½in strip, two (2) 13in x 2½in strips, two (2) 15½in x 2½in strips, one

(1) 16in x 2½in strip, two (2) 18in x 2½in strips and forty (40) 2½in squares. ■ Sew the last seven (7) 2½in x WOF strips together. Subcut two (2) 2½in x 67½in strips and two (2) 2½in x 71½in strips.

■ Fifty five (55) 1in x WOF strips. Subcut into three hundred and ninety three

(393) 2½in x 1in strips, four (4) 3in x 1in strips, sixty (60) 10in x 1in strips and fifteen (15) 40in x 1in strips.

■ Five (5) 4¾in x WOF strips. Subcut into two (2) 40in x 4¾in strips. Sew the remaining three strips end-to-end and subcut into two (2) 48½in x 4¾in strips.

■ One (1) 4½in x WOF strip. Subcut into four (4) 10in x 4½in strips.

■ Two (2) 3in x WOF strips. Subcut into eight (8) 6½in x 3in strips.

4

From the binding fabric cut:

■ Eight (8) 2½in x WOF strips.

MAKING THE HSTS

5

Take an HST FPP template, one background 6½in x 9½in rectangle and one print 6½in x 9½in rectangle. Pin the

print and background rectangles to the unprinted side of the template, with fabrics right sides together. The fabrics will overhang the template by approx. ¼in.

6

Sew along the dashed lines on the HST FPP template, starting at the one of the marked template dots. Sew in one continuous line, pivoting with your needle down at corners, and ending at the other dot. Trim the template and fabric along the solid lines. Press each HST unit open – you should have twelve. Remove the paper from the back of each HST unit by tearing along the seam line.

7

Repeat steps 5– 6 with each of the remaining print and background 6½in x 9½in rectangles. You will need eight HST units for each small heart. The remainder will be used, where necessary, for the large central heart. You will have a few left over at the end.

PIECING THE SMALL HEART BLOCKS

8

To make one small heart block using colour 2, take eight HST units, six print

2½in squares, two background 2½in squares and twelve background 1in x 2½in strips. Arrange the 2½in squares and HST units into four rows of four. Sew the units in rows, with the background strips in between each unit (Fig 1).

9

Sew the rows together, inserting a background 1in x 10in strip in between each row, to complete one block (Fig 2).

10

Repeat steps 8–9 to make a total of sixteen small heart blocks, using colours 2–5, 7–10, 12–15 and 17–20.

11

To make one corner block, arrange the colour 1 and background pieces as in steps 8–9, but insert a 1in x 3in strip in the middle of the bottom row (Fig 3).

12

Sew two background 3in x 6½in rectangles to the sides of the heart, aligning the edges with the top of the block. Join a 4½in x 10in rectangle to the top. Trim the block to 10in square, framing the heart so that it’s on point (Fig 4). Remember to leave a ¼in seam allowance from the two bottom edges of the heart, as illustrated.

13

Repeat steps 11–12 to make the remaining corner blocks using fabrics

6, 11 and 16.

ASSEMBLING THE CENTRE HEART

14

Arrange the remaining HST units, print 2½in squares, background

1in x 2½in strips and assorted background 2½in strips into the sixteen large heart rows, referring to the Layout Diagram for colours and placement. Sew the units into rows.

15

Sew the sixteen rows together, inserting a background 1in x 40in strip in between each row.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

16

Join the background 40in x 4¾in strips to the sides of the pieced centre heart. Press the seams, then join the background 48½in x 4¾in strips to the top and bottom.

17

Sew the small heart blocks into four strips of four, inserting a background

2 in x 10in strip in between each block and at either end. Refer to the Layout Diagram to group your hearts into strips.

18

Sew the four corner hearts onto the ends of two of your strips, making sure to position them so the points will be facing the centre of the quilt. Sew the two shorter heart strips to opposite sides of your quilt top, then sew the two longer strips to the remaining edges.

19 in

Join the background 67 in x 2 strips to the sides, then join the background 71 in x 2 in strips to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

20

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

21

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally

and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

22

Quilt as desired. Lynne quilted a crosshatch of diagonal lines across the quilt, using a light coloured thread. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

23

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press. 24

Sew the joined binding strip to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish, using a coordinating thread.
