PIECING THE FRONT

9 Fold piece 1 and 2 in half and finger press to mark the half way point on the curves. Place RST, matching the inner curve of piece 2 with the curve of piece 1. Pin in place matching the ends and centre marks (Fig A).

10 Ease the curves between these points and pin in place. Sew along the curve (Fig B). Press the seam towards piece 2 (Fig C).

11 Repeat steps 9–10 to add piece 3 to the top of section 2, pressing the seam towards piece 3 (Fig D). Continue adding the pieces 4–9 in order, to complete the pieced front (Fig E).

PIECING THE BACK

12 Place one Fabric A 5in square RST with one Fabric B 5in square. Draw a diagonal line on the reverse of one square. Sew ¼in from either side of the drawn line. Cut along the line and press open to make two HSTs. Trim each HST to 4½in square.

13 Repeat step 12 to make the following HSTs:

■ Three (3) A/B HSTs.

■ Four (4) A/G HSTs.

■ Two (2) B/C HSTs.

■ Two (2) E/F HSTs.

■ Three (3) F/G HSTs.

14 Arrange the HSTs and the Fabric C and E 4½in squares in four rows of four, as shown in the Layout Diagram. Sew together in rows, then sew the rows together.

15 Sew a 1¾in x 16½in background strip to the top and bottom of the pieced HSTs. Then sew a 1¾in x 19in background strip to each side.

QUILTING THE RAINBOW

16 Make a quilt sandwich by placing one lining square right side down, a batting square on top, then the cushion front centrally and right side up. The lining and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method. Repeat to make a quilt sandwich with the cushion back.

17 Quilt the front and back as desired. Rebecca quilted three evenly spaced lines along each rainbow segment and also along the seam lines, marking with an erasable pencil first, and using matching threads (Figs F– G). She also quilted above the rainbow using metallic thread, spaced slightly farther apart.

MAKING UP THE CUSHION

18 Trim both the cushion front and back to 19in square. Place the front and back pieces RST and pin along the bottom edge only. Mark 2in from each edge along the bottom.

19 Stitch from the outer edge to the first mark using a ½in seam allowance, backstitching at the end. Repeat at the other side. Use a long basting stitch to sew between these two marks.

20 Press the bottom seam open. Lay the zipper face down on the wrong side of the fabric, centring along the basted part of the seam. Stitch in place using a zipper foot.

21 Use a seam ripper to carefully remove your basting stitches. Unzip the zipper roughly halfway.

22 Place the cushion front and back RST again. Stitch around the top and side edges, using a ½in seam allowance. Carefully clip the corners, turn right out and press. Insert a cushion pad to finish.
