MAKING THE QUARTER LOG CABINS

7

Sew a white 1¼in x 2¾in strip to the top of a blue 2¾in square. Press the seam towards the square. Then sew a white 1¼in x 3½in strip to the right edge, as shown in Fig 1, again pressing the seam toward the square.

8

Sew a blue 1¾in x 3½in strip to the top of the block, and then a blue 1¾in x 4¾in strip to the right. Again press the seams towards the square. Continue adding strips in size order, alternating sets of white and blue strips (Fig 2). If necessary, trim the Quarter Log Cabin block to 8¾in square.

9

Repeat steps 7– 8 to make forty blue/white Quarter Log Cabins and eight blue/orange Quarter Log Cabins.

MAKING THE BLOCKS

10

Take three blue/white and one blue/orange Quarter Log Cabins. Arrange in a four-patch, as shown in Fig 3. Sew together in pairs, pressing the seam for the top pair to the right, and for the bottom pair to the left. Then sew the pairs together, pressing the seam in opposite directions to spin the seam. This completes one Block A.

11

Repeat step 10 to make a total of four Block A. Use the same method to make four each of Block B and Block C, referring to Fig 4 for placement. Press

the seams in the same way for each block, taking care to position the Quarter Log Cabins as shown.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT

12

Arrange the completed blocks, referring to Fig 5. Sew the blocks together in pairs, carefully nesting the seams, and pressing to the opposite sides to spin the seams.

13

Sew the pairs together into rows, to make the top and bottom half of the quilt. Sew the two halves together to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

14

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges

and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

15

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

16

Quilt as desired. Cait quilted a striking straight line design using a white thread to pop against the blue fabric. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

17

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold the strips in half lengthways, with wrong sides together, and press again to create the binding.

18

Sew the prepared binding to the right side of the quilt, and create a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch neatly in place to finish.
