CUTTING OUT

1 Cut out your pieces as outlined below. When using the templates, trace around them on the fabric using a chalk marker on the right side of the fabric, making sure to leave space between pieces to add a seam allowance around each one. Cut out each shape, adding a scant ¼in seam allowance all the way around for each.

2 From the dark blue fabric cut:

■ Four (4) ¾in x 19in.

■ Eight (8) Arrow templates.

3

From the dusty pink fabric cut:

■ Two (2) 1in x 19in.

■ Sixteen (16) Triangle templates.

4

From the dark pink fabric cut:

■ Two (2) 3¼in x 19in.

■ Twenty two (22) Circle templates.

5

From the dark coral fabric cut:

■ Two (2) 1in x 19in.

6

From the blue fabric cut:

■ Two (2) Triple Point templates.

■ Eighteen (18) Triangle templates.

7

From the background fabric cut:

■ One (1) 19in square.

8

From the backing fabric cut:

■ One (1) 18½in x 16in.

■ One (1) 18½in x 13in.

APPLIQUÉING THE STRIPES

9

Mark ¼in from each side of your background square, to mark an 18½in square in the centre. Mark the vertical and horizontal centre. Referring to Fig 1, mark the stripe sections, measuring from the centre.

10

Add your stripes of fabric working from the centre out, referring to the Layout Diagram. Begin by placing a coral strip centred over the lines. Pin in place, then appliqué along the long edges using your marked lines to keep the stripe straight on each edge. Repeat to add the other coral and the four dark blue stripes.

11

Repeat the process in step 10 to appliqué the dark pink stripes. Then mark two lines, ½in apart, along the centre of each dark pink stripe. Appliqué the dusty pink stripes over these lines.

APPLIQUÉING THE CENTRE MOTIF

12

Note, for the following steps 13–18, only the centre area of the cushion is shown in the figures.

13

Mark a vertical line !/ 8in from the centre of the background. Mark a 45-degree line from where this line meets the horizontal centre. Place one arrow with the point in the centre, and the outer edge along the 45-degree line. Appliqué in place (Fig 2).

14

Place a second arrow 1in away from the point of the first arrow. Appliqué in place. Measure 7/8in from the point of this arrow. Place a circle along the centre line, so the edge aligns with this mark. Appliqué in place (Fig 3).

15

Measure and mark ½in from the last marked line, and ¼in above and below the centre line. Place two circles so their edges align with these marks (Fig 4).

16

Measure and mark 5¾in from the vertical centre. Mark a 45 degree line from this line and appliqué one arrow in place, as in step 13. Repeat steps 14–15 to add a second arrow and three circles (Fig 5).

17

Mark 3%/ 8in from the vertical centre. Place the straight base of a triple point piece along this line, aligning the centre point with the centre of the cushion. Pin in place, then appliqué.

18

Mark 5%/ 8in from the vertical centre. Arrange five dots evenly, with their outer edges along this line. The top and bottom dots should be ¼in away from the coral stripe. Pin, then appliqué in place (Fig 6).

19

Repeat steps 13–18 to appliqué the other side of the centre motif.

APPLIQUÉING THE TRIANGLES

20

Starting from the centre, mark vertical lines 1!/ 8in apart in the sections between the dark blue stripes.

21

Appliqué the triangles in place, aligning the points with your marks and centring between the stripes. Alternate the blue and dusty pink triangles, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement.

FINISHING THE CUSHION

22

Remove any remaining marks and basting stitches from the cushion top. Press well, using a light spray of starch. Trim to 18½in square, carefully centring the cushion top.

23

Cut a length of pompom trim to 18½in, and align at one side of the cushion. The pompoms should be towards the centre of the cushion, with the flat edge aligned to the raw edge. Secure with a few dots of appliqué glue then baste in place. Repeat at the other side of the cushion front.

24

Take one backing piece and press under 1in along one raw edge. Press under 1in again, enclosing the raw edge. Topstitch in place. Repeat with the other backing piece.

25

With the cushion front right side up, place the larger backing piece on top, RST. Align the raw edges at one side and along the top and bottom. Place the second backing piece on top, right side down, aligning the raw edges at the other side of the cushion. Pin, then baste in place.

26

Sew along the two sides with the pompom trim, lock-stitching at each end to secure in place. It may be helpful to use a zipper foot when sewing along these edges. Sew along the top and bottom, lock-stitching at each end.

27

Trim the corners, turn the cushion cover right side out and press to finish.
