YOU WILL NEED To make the cushion

■ Three (3) print fat eighths, or the extra block from your quilt top

■ Background fabric: one (1) fat quarter

■ Backing fabric: two (2) fat quarters

■ Lining fabric: 20in square

■ Batting: 20in sqaure

FINISHED SIZE

■ 17in square

CUTTING OUT

1

From the background fabric cut:

■ Two (2) 13in x 3in.

■ Two (2) 18in x 3in.

2

From the backing fabric cut:

■ One (1) 18in x 14in.

■ One (1) 18in x 11in.

MAKING THE BLOCK

3

If you are using the extra block from the quilt, skip to step 9. When cutting the print fabrics, cut all of Unit A from one fabric, all of Unit B from a second fabric and all of Unit C from a third fabric.

4

From the print fabrics cut:

■ Two (2) 3 in squares [A].

■ One (1) 6 in square. Cut in half along both diagonals to make four small triangles [B].

■ Two (2) 6 in squares. Cut each square in half along one diagonal to make a total of four large triangles [C].

5

From the background fabric cut:

■ Five (5) 3in squares.

■ Two (2) 3 in squares.

6

Pair each Unit A square RST with a background 3 in square. Follow steps 9–10 of the quilt instructions to make four HST units, trimming to 3in square. Sew a 3in background square to each HST, as shown in Fig 3 to make four right units.

7

Arrange one of each Unit B, background and Unit C triangles as shown in Fig 4 on p19 of the quilt instructions for a right Split QST. Sew the Unit B and background triangles together. Press the seam open, then join to the Fabric C triangle. Repeat this process to make a total of four right Split QST units.

8

Make one right block following step 17 of the quilt instructions on p21.

MAKING THE CUSHION

9

Sew the 3in x 13in strips to either side of the quilt block. Then sew the 3in x 18in strips to the top and bottom.

10

Layer the lining square, batting and completed cushion top to make a quilt sandwich. Baste and quilt as desired. Trim away the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the cushion front.

11

Press under in along one long raw edge of a backing piece. Press under again to enclose the raw edge. Topstitch in place. Repeat with the other backing piece.

12

With the cushion top right side up, layer the two backing pieces on top, both right side down, aligning raw edges, so the hemmed edges overlap in the centre.

13

Pin around the outer edge, then sew all the way around the outer edge. Clip the corners and turn right side out to finish.
