PIECING THE HST UNITS

Place one print and one background

5

41/2in square RST. Draw two diagonal lines on the wrong side of the lighter square. Sew 1/4in from either side of the marked line. Cut the unit in half vertically and horizontally. Then cut each unit along the marked diagonal line. Press each unit open for a total of eight HST units (Fig 1).

Repeat step 5, pairing each of the print 6

squares with a background square. Trim each HST to 13/4in square, for a total of three

hundred and ninety two HSTs. Keep the HSTs in matching sets of eight for each block.

PIECING THE BLOCKS

Take one print 3in square, eight

7

matching HSTs and four background 13/4in squares. Arrange as shown in Fig 2.

Sew the HSTs together in pairs. Sew 8

one pair either side of the print 3in square. Sew one background square to either end of the remaining HST pairs. Sew these longer strips to the top and bottom to complete one star block.

Repeat steps 7– 8 to make a total 9

of forty nine star blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

Arrange the blocks in seven rows 10

of seven blocks, alternating the cool and warm blocks, referring to the Layout Diagram on p24.

Sew the blocks together in rows, with a 11

21/2in x 51/2in background strip between

each block. Join the rows with a background 2½in x 47½in strip between each row.

Sew the 4in x 47½in strips to the sides 12 of the quilt top. Then sew the 4in x 54½in strips to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top.

FINISHING THE QUILT

Cut the backing fabric in half across 13

the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.

Press the quilt top and backing well. 14

Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method. We used Odif 505 spray for quick and easy basting.

Quilt as desired. Lynne quilted a 15

diagonal cross hatch of lines approx 1¼in apart using a cream 40wt thread on the front and back.

Sew the binding strips end to end 16

using diagonal or straight seams as preferred. Fold and press in half wrong sides together along the length. Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
