■ Six (6) 21/2in x WOF strips.
PIECING THE HST UNITS
7 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side
of a Fabric E 5in square. Place RST with one Fabric B square and sew 1/4in from either side of the line. Cut along the drawn line to make two units. Press the seam towards the darker triangle for each HST, and trim to 41/2in square (Fig 1).
8 Repeat step 7 to make a total of thirty
six Fabric B/E HSTs and twenty eight Fabric A/E HSTs.
9 Repeat step 7 again, using 3in squares
and trimming the HSTs to 21/2in squares, to make the following units:
■ Two Fabric A/E HSTs.
■ Two Fabric D/E HSTs (only one
will be used).
■ Two Fabric C/E HSTs (only one
will be used).
■ Two Fabric A/D HSTs (only one
will be used).
■ Two Fabric A/C HSTs (only one
will be used).
PIECING THE FOUR-PATCH BLOCKS
10 Arrange the 21/2in HSTs in a four-patch
with a Fabric C or Fabric D 21/2in square, as shown in Fig 2. Sew together in pairs then sew the pairs together to complete each four-patch block.
PIECING THE CORNER SQUARE BLOCKS
11 Take one Fabric A 41/2in square and
one each of Fabric C and D 21/2in squares. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 21/2in squares.
12 Place the Fabric D square in the top
left corner. Stitch along the marked line, then trim 1/4in from the line.
Press open. Repeat with the Fabric C square in the top right corner (Fig 3).
13 Repeat steps 11–12 to make a second
identical unit. Repeat again, referring to Fig 4 for colours and number of units.
14 Follow the method in steps 11–12
to add corners one at a time to a Fabric E 4½in square using one Fabric C, one Fabric D and two Fabric B 2½in squares, as shown in Fig 5.
PIECING THE STRIPED UNITS
15 Take one Fabric C and one Fabric D
2½in x WOF strip. Sew together along the long edges. Repeat to make a total eight stripe strips.
16 Subcut the stripe strips as follows:
■ Strip one: one (1) 28½in long unit
and one (1) 8½in long unit.
■ Strip two: one (1) 28½in long unit and
one (1) 8½in long unit.
■ Strip three: two (2) 16½in long units and
one (1) 6½in long unit.
■ Strip four: two (2) 16½in long units.
■ Strip five: one (1) 20½in long unit and
one (1) 16½in long unit.
■ Strip six: one (1) 20½in long unit and one
(1) 16½in long unit.
■ Strip seven: one (1) 12½in long unit and
two (2) 8½in long units.
■ Strip eight: four (4) 8½in long units.
PIECING THE EVEN ROWS
17 Take four Fabric A/E HSTs, four
Fabric B/E HSTs and one Fabric E 4½in x 20½in strip. Arrange as shown in Fig 6. Sew the HSTs together in pairs, then sew the units together in one row, paying careful attention to the orientation of the units. This completes Row 2 of the quilt.
18 Repeat the process to piece Rows 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12, referring to Fig 7 for orientation of the HSTs and the Fabric E pieces to use at the end of each row.
PIECING ROWS 1, 3, 11 AND 13
19 Take one 8½in long stripe unit and one Fabric B 4½in square. Arrange the strip unit with the Fabric D strip at the top. Using the process outlined in steps 11–12, add a yellow corner to the top right corner (Fig 8).
20 Take one 16½in stripe unit. With the Fabric D strip at the top, add a Fabric
B triangle to the top right and bottom left corners. Take one 28½in stripe unit with the Fabric D strip at the top, and add a Fabric E triangle to the bottom right and a Fabric B triangle to the bottom left corners.
21 Arrange the units in one row, referring to Fig 9 for placement. Sew together to make Row 1 of the quilt.
22 Referring to Fig 10 for strip unit length and corner orientation and colours, use the same process from Row 1 to make each of Rows 3, 11 and 13.
PIECING ROWS 5 AND 9
23 Refer to Fig 11 to arrange the units for both Row 5 and 9. Use the process in steps 19–20 to add corners to the stripe
units in the colours and orientations shown. Sew the units together for each row.
PIECING ROW 7
24 Take the 6½in long and 12½in long stripe units. With the Fabric D stripe at the top, add triangles to the top right and bottom right corners, using Fabric A 2½in squares. Use the same process as given in steps 11–12.
25 Arrange the strip units with the remaining units, as shown in Fig 12. Sew together to complete Row 7 of the quilt.
PIECING THE QUILT TOP
26 Carefully arrange the rows in order, referring to the Layout Diagram. Sew the rows together, carefully matching the seams of the diagonals. Press seams open or to one side, as preferred.
QUILTING AND FINISHING
27 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.
28 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.
29 Quilt as desired. Paula chose simple straight lines echoing the design of the quilt. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.
30 Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.
31 Sew the prepared binding along the edges of the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure in place temporarily with binding clips. Hand stitch in place to finish.
