NOTES

■ Seam allowances are 1/4in, unless otherwise noted.

■ Press seams open throughout, unless

otherwise instructed.

■ RST = right sides together.

■ WOF = width of fabric.

■ Pattern assumes fabric is at least 42in wide, excluding selvedges. If your fabric is not this wide, you may need to cut an extra strip of each fabric.

FABRICS USED

■ Solid fabrics are all Kona Cotton Solids in Sky, Breeze, Lake, Horizon and Malibu.

■ Backing fabric is Metallic Rattan in Bright Blue from the Clementine collection by Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society.

CUTTING OUT

1 From Fabric A cut:

■ Five (5) 21/2in x WOF.

2 From Fabric B cut:

■ Fourteen (14) 21/2in x WOF.

3 From each of Fabric C, D and E cut:

■ Nine (9) 21/2in x WOF.

4 From the binding fabric cut:

■ Six (6) 2in x WOF wide strips.

PREPARING THE STRIPS

5 Cut each of the WOF strips in half to make strips approx 21/2in x 21.

If your strips are shorter than 21in when cut in half, cut an extra WOF strip of each fabric. You can use these to make an extra strip set as outlined in steps 6–7 to cut units as required.

PIECING THE FIRST BLOCK

6 Take one Fabric A strip, three Fabric B strips and two each of Fabric C, D and E strips. Arrange as shown in Fig 1, and sew together along the long edges. Press all seams toward the same side.

7 Fold the strip set RST, aligning the long raw edges. Sew right along the long edge to form a tube.

8 Arrange the tube on your cutting mat, ensuring it is flat, and the seams are lined up. Cut the tube into the following strips (Fig A):

■ Four (4) 11/2in wide strips.

■ Three (3) 21/2in wide strips.

■ Two (2) 31/2in wide strips.

9 Arrange the prepared pieced strips in 9 the order illustrated in Fig 2, referring to the measurements listed at the top of the figure for the correct position of each of the nine strips. To achieve the Bargello pattern of the quilt, you will need to unpick one seam in each cut strip, as explained in step 10.

10 Take the 1½in strip at the left, and find the Fabric A piece. Move one fabric above the Fabric A piece, and unpick the seam. Repeat with the remaining strips, referring to Fig 2 for the position of the Fabric A piece and where to unpick the seam (Figs B– C).

11 With your strips laid out in the correct order, check the way the seams lie. Make sure each strip alternates (with the first strip with seams pressed up and the second strip pressed down), repressing strips if necessary.

12 Sew the prepared strips together to form one Block 1, carefully nesting the seams between strips (Fig D). Take care to keep your strips in order to create the Bargello pattern.

PIECING THE REMAINING BLOCKS AND QUILT TOP

13 Repeat steps 6–12 to make a total of five Block 1. Repeat the process again to make four Block 2, referring carefully to Fig 3 for the position of the strips.

14 Arrange the blocks in three rows of three, referring to the Layout Diagram. Sew the blocks together in rows, then sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.

FINISHING THE QUILT

15 Cut the backing in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.

16 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste layers together.

17 Quilt as desired. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt. Sew the six binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and firmly press.

18 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre edge at each corner. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt. Hand stitch in place to finish.
