YOU WILL NEED
■ Centre squares fabric: !/ 8yd
■ Dark blue fabric: ¾yd
■ Light blue fabric: ¾yd
■ Dark yellow fabric: 5/8yd
■ Light yellow fabric: 5/8yd
■ Background fabric: 2½yds total
■ Batting: 75in square
■ Backing fabric: 4¼yds
■ Binding fabric: ½yd

■ 63in square

Repeat steps 6–7, swapping positions of the background and blue strips to make twenty blocks with short blue sides (Fig 3).

Referring to Figs 4a– 4b, make the yellow blocks using the same process in steps 6–9. You will make sixteen blocks with long yellow sides and twenty blocks with short yellow sides.
ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

Arrange the blocks in nine rows of nine blocks, referring to the Layout Diagram.

Sew the blocks together in rows, then sew the nine rows together, carefully matching seams.
QUILTING AND FINISHING

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

Quilt as desired. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt. Sew the binding strips together end-to-end with diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together. Press.

Sew the joined binding strip to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand or machine stitch in place around the edge to finish.
