MAKING THE CHENILLE STRIPS

18

Stack the four red squares on top of each other, all right side up. Use a quilt ruler to draw a 45-degree line from corner to corner. Then mark additional lines every ½in. Stitch along every other marked line, through all four layers. Cut along the remaining unstitched lines (Fig A).

19

Square off the ends of the strips (Fig B). Take one of the longer strips and one of the shorter strips. Overlap the ends, then stitch the overlapped portion, along the previously stitched line (Fig C). Repeat to sew all the strips into one long length, alternating the longer and shorter sections.

20

Repeat the joining process in steps 18–19 using the squares of solid green, light pink, dark pink, yellow, purple and blue fabrics to make long continuous strips of each colour.

MAKING THE BLOCKS

21

Using the template on p42 as a guide, mark the centre dot on the right side of each record label piece, using a removable fabric marker.

22

Take one white 8in square and layer on top of a matching batting piece. Position a red quarter record piece in one corner, with both pieces right sides up. Pin to secure and baste in place in from the curved edge. 23

Take one ladies print and one white quarter label piece. Place the print piece on top of the white piece. Arrange in the corner of the unit from step 22, and baste in place in from the curved edge.

24

Take the red chenille strip and layer on top of the block, so the outer edge of the strip aligns with the outer edge of the record piece. Pin in place and trim the edges of the strip even with the edge of the block. Repeat to add a strip aligned with the edge of the label piece. Add two more strips, spacing them evenly between the first two (Fig D).

25

Topstitch each of the chenille strips in place, stitching along the previous stitching line and backstitching at each end. Carefully folding the chenille strips out of the way, trim away the outer edge of the label piece (Fig E).

26

Use the wire brush to fluff the chenille strips, brushing in multiple directions. Be careful as you work not to snag the background or label fabric. Then trim away any stray threads (Fig F).

27

Repeat the process in steps 22–26 to make all the chenille blocks as listed here. You will make a total of four quarter record blocks using the white 8in squares. Use white 8in x 15in rectangles to make a total of twelve half record blocks. Use white 15in squares to make five whole record blocks. When adding the completed chenille strips to the whole record blocks, overlap the ends of the chenille strips for each round.

28

Working one block at a time, layer a print square on the back side of

each whole block, wrong sides together, and sew around the outer edge using a !/ 8in seam allowance. Repeat for the quarter and half blocks, using a print piece of the same size.

QUILTING THE BLOCKS

29

Use the quilting template to mark the circles on a 15in white square. Layer the square on top of a matching batting square and baste in place. Quilt along the marked lines (Fig G). Place a 15in print square on the back, wrong sides together, and sew around the outer edge using a !/ 8in seam allowance.

30

Repeat step 29 to make a total of four blocks. Use the same process to make eight half blocks, using 8in x 15in pieces.

JOINING THE BLOCKS

31

Arrange your quilted blocks in rows, referring to the quilt photography. Working one row at a time, join the blocks as outlined below, using the white 1in wide and selvedge strips.

32

Take one corner block from the first row. Place a white 1in x 8in strip RST with the front of the block on the side to be joined with the next block. Place a selvedge 1¼in x 8in strip RST with the back of the block, matching the raw edges and sandwiching the block in between. Sew in place.

33

Press the strips away from the block. You may wish to press under ¼in along the long edge of the selvedge (Fig H). However, as this is a finished edge you may leave it unpressed. 34

Fold the selvedge strip back towards the block. Pin the next block in the row RST with the white strip, aligning the raw edges. Sew in place. Press the seam towards the white strip (Fig I). Unfold the selvedge so it covers the raw edges of the block at the back. Slipstitch in place (Fig J).

35

Repeat the process in steps 32–34 to join the remaining blocks in the first row, and then piece the remaining blocks into rows. 36

Take a 62in long white and selvedge strip and sew it to the bottom of the first row of joined quilted blocks, as in steps 32–33. Trim the edges of the selvedge strips evenly with the edges of the row of blocks.

37

Then join the second row to the bottom, following steps 34–35, carefully matching the ends and seams. Repeat this process until all the rows are joined to complete the quilt top.

BINDING THE QUILT

38

Take two 2 in x 18in white binding strips and one blue, green and shorter red binding strip. Sew a white strip to either side of the green strip, then join the blue and red strips to either end, pressing the seams open.

39

Press the strip in half lengthwise, WST. Sew the binding to the side edge of the quilt, aligning raw edges and matching the seams to the records (Fig K).

40

Trim the ends even with the edges of the quilt top. Press the binding away from the quilt, fold to the back, and hand stitch in place.

41

Repeat steps 38– 40 to make the other side binding, using the colours to match this side of the quilt. Repeat again to make the top and bottom binding strips, leaving the ends untrimmed. Note, when hand stitching the binding in place, make sure to press the raw ends under before sewing (Fig L).

ADDING THE BUTTONS

42

Cover each of the buttons, following the manufacturer’s instructions and using the black fabric. Hand stitch each button in place at the centre of each chenille block to finish (Fig M).
