PIECING THE BLOCKS

12

Starting with the centre, place a Fabric A Template 1 square RST along one edge of a Background Template 2 triangle. Insert pins directly through the exact points of your pencil marks. Pin the two ends first and then insert three or four pins along the seam, ensuring they are coming out on the drawn line on the back as well as the front (Figs A– B).

13

Turn the unit over to begin sewing from the triangle side. Insert your needle about 1in away from the left end of your seam and sew a tiny running stitch up to the drawn point, being sure to check that you are sewing through the pencil line on the back as well (Fig C). Once you get to the marked end point, push the needle to the other side exactly on the point and begin sewing from the other side (Fig D). Remove the pins as you come to them, and work a backstitch to secure the fabrics together, approx every 1in along the seam line.

14

When you get to the end of the seam, push the needle to the back and backstitch over the seam for about 1in to secure, then break the thread. Finger press the seam towards the triangle, or use a seam roller (Fig E).

15

Using the same technique, add another triangle to the opposite side of the square. Then add two more triangles to the remaining sides (Fig 2).

16

Sew two background Template 4 triangles to a Template 3 square in Fabric C (Fig 3). Press the seams towards the triangles.

17

Sew two Template 2 triangles to the bottom edges of the unit (Fig 4). When attaching the Template 2 triangles, sew up to the seam between the triangle and square, holding the seam allowance out of the way. Then push the seam in the other direction as you continue the line of sewing, so it is not caught in the new seam. Repeat this process to make four of these units.

18

Take two of the units from step 17 and sew a Template 5 piece to either end (Fig 5).

19

Sew the other two units to either side of the centre unit, making sure to align the points of the units (Fig 6). As in step 17, ensure you hold the seam allowance out of the way as you sew, so it is not caught in the new seams.

20

Sew the units from step 18 to the top and bottom of the centre unit to complete one block.

21

Repeat steps 12–20 to make a total of five blocks using Fabrics A– D. Repeat the steps again to make four blocks using Fabrics E–H.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

22

Arrange your completed blocks in three rows of three blocks, referring to the photograph on p76 for placement.

23

Using a quilting ruler, mark lines ¼in from the edges of the 2½in x 9½in sashing strips (Fig F). Join your blocks in rows, with the sashing strips in between, and using the same method you used to hand piece the blocks. Finger press the seams towards the sashing strips.

24

Join the rows together, using the 2½in x 31½in sashing strips in between, and marking the sashing strips as in step 23.

27

Quilt as desired. Louisa used a walking foot and white thread to quilt wavy lines across the whole quilt top, in some places echoing the previous line, in others mirroring it, to create a fluid, dynamic effect.

28

Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt to measure 37in square.

29

Sew the four binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

30

Sew the joined binding strip to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure temporarily in place with pins or binding clips. Hand or machine stitch the binding in place around the edge to finish.

PIECING THE QUILT

8

Follow steps 12–21 of the first quilt instructions to make a total of ten blocks using Fabrics A– D and ten blocks using Fabrics E–H.

9

Arrange your blocks in five rows of four blocks, alternating the block colourways and referring to the photography. Sew the blocks together in rows, pressing seams in opposite directions between rows. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top. 10

Mark lines ¼in from the edges of your border strips, referring to step 23 of the first quilt instructions. Sew the 4½in x 36½in border strips to the top and bottom, pressing seams toward the border strips.

11

Join a 4½in x 12½in strip to the end of a 4½in x 41½in strip along the short edge. Repeat the process to make a second border strip. Join these border strips to either side of the quilt top, marking the long edge as in step 10 before sewing.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

12

Cut the backing fabric in half along the width. Sew together along the long edges using a ½in seam. Press open. 13

Press the quilt top well with an iron to set the seams. Press the backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

14

Quilt as desired. Louisa quilted in the ditch along the main vertical and horizontal seams. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt to measure 44in x 53in.

15

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

16

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch into place around the edge to finish.
