CORNER SQUARE TRIANGLES (CST)

-

To sew a Corner-square Triangle (CST), place a square in the corner of a fabric piece, RST. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the square, referring carefully to figures for direction. Sew along the diagonal line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼in and press the piece open to complete.

towards the print and right corner towards the background (Fig 2).

10

Take one background 4in square. Add a print 2 in CST to one corner of the background square, using a print square matching the unit in step 9, and pressing the seam towards the print corner (Fig 3). Repeat this process to make a second matching unit, pressing the seam towards the background square.

11

Join the two background units from step 10, nesting the seams of the CSTs. Press the seam open. Then join the matching unit to the top, pressing the seam toward the larger print piece (Fig 4). This completes one Shell Block.

12

Repeat steps 9–11 to make a total of sixty three shell blocks.

PIECING THE MAMA TURTLE BLOCK

13

Gather together the prints for the Mama Turtle block (see steps 2– 4 on p26). Take one body 2 in square and add CSTs to the top two corners using 1 in background squares. Sew a background 2 in x 4 in piece to either side to form the head (Fig 5). 14

Join a background 1in x 4 in strip to the top of a 2in x 4 in body piece. Add a background 1 in square CST to the top left corner and a contrast A 2 in square CST to the bottom right corner, to complete the left flipper (Fig 6).

15

Repeat the process in step 14 to make the right flipper, adding the background CST to the top right corner and the contrast A CST to the bottom left corner. Sew both of the flippers to either side of a contrast B 2 in square (Fig 7).

16

Make the centre of the Mama Turtle shell by joining a contrast B 2 in square to either side of a contrast A 2 in square. Then join a background 2 in square to both ends (Fig 8).

17

Take one body 3 in square. Add a background 2 in square CST to two opposite corners. Add a contrast A 2 in square CST to a remaining corner (Fig 9). Repeat to make a second leg unit.

18

Take the contrast A 1 in x 2 in, and add a background 1 in square CST to the bottom two corners to form the Mama Turtle tail. Join the tail unit to the bottom of a contrast B 2 in square (Fig 10).

19

Join the leg units to either side of the tail unit. Then join a background 1 in x3 in piece to either end (Fig 11). You will now have four completed rows.

20

Join the four rows together to form the turtle, pressing the seams open or to one side. Join a 2 in x 9 in background strip to either side of the turtle. Then join 3in x 14 in background strips to the top and bottom to complete the Mama Turtle block (Fig 12).

PIECING THE HATCHLING TURTLE BLOCKS

21

Organise your print fabrics in sets of three for each Hatchling Turtle block. Label the pieces if necessary. To make one block you will need the following print pieces:

■ Body print: one (1) 1 in square and

four (4) 2in squares.

■ Contrast A print: five (5) 1 in squares

and one (1) 1in x 1 in.

■ Contrast B print: four (4) 1 in squares. 22

Add background 1in square CSTs to the top two corners of the body print 1 in square to form the head. Then join a contrast B square to the bottom (Fig 13).

23

Add a background 1 in square CST to two opposite corner of each body 2in square. Then add a contrast A 1 in square CST to one of the remaining corners of each unit to form four leg units in total (Fig 14).

24

Join the contrast A 1in x 1 in piece to the bottom of a contrast B 1 in square. Then add background 1in square CSTs to the bottom two corners of the unit to form the tail unit (Fig 15).

25

Take the head unit and two leg units. Join a background 1in x 2in piece to the top of each leg unit, referring to Fig 16 for orientation. Then join these to either side of the head unit.

26

Join the remaining contrast A squares to either side of the contrast B square. Then join a background 1in x 1 in piece to either side. Join this strip to the bottom of the head unit. Refer to Fig 17 for placement of the strips.

27

Join the remaining leg units to either side of the tail unit. Join this piece to the bottom of the completed unit from step 26 to form the turtle. Join a 2in x 5in background piece to either side.

28

Finally join a 1¾in x 7½in background piece to the top and bottom of the unit to complete one Hatchling Turtle Block (Fig 18). Repeat steps 21–28 to make a total of five Turtle Hatchling blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT

29

Arrange your blocks referring to the Layout Diagram below. To sew the row with the Mama Turtle block, join the smaller blocks together in pairs. Then join the pairs together with the large block to form a row.

30

Join the remaining blocks together in rows. You will have seven rows of eight small blocks, and one double row containing the large block. Sew all the rows together.

31

Join the two 4in x WOF strips along the short edges, pressing the seam open. Sew to the top of the quilt, trimming the ends of strip even with the quilt top. Repeat with the 2½in x WOF strips, joining to the bottom of the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

32

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open. Press the quilt top and backing well.

33

Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

34

Quilt as desired. Jayne Brereton (Quilter’s Trading Post) quilted a design echoing the shape of waves on the ocean. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

35

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

36

Sew the joined binding strip to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand or machine stitch in place to finish.
