PIECING THE CUSHION

8

Follow steps 9–11 of the turtle quilt instructions to make four Shell blocks. Then follow steps 13–20 to make one Mama Turtle block.

9

Join the Shell blocks in a four-patch, referring to the photography above for placement. Then join the completed Mama Turtle block to one side.

FINISHING THE CUSHION

10

Press the cushion top well and layer on top of the batting, right side up. Quilt as desired. Nicola echoed the shape of the seashells. Trim away any excess batting.

11

Arrange the ricrac along each side of the cushion top, so that the ¼in seam will run through the centre of the trim. Pin or clip in place to secure. Then stay stitch $/ 8in from the cushion edge. Trim any excess ricrac even with all the edges of the cushion.

12

Press one short edge of the cushion backing fabric under ¼in twice, to enclose the raw edge. Topstitch in place. Repeat with the other backing fabric piece.

13

With the cushion right side up, layer the backing pieces on top, both right side down. Align the raw edges around the outer edge of the cushion top, with the hemmed edges overlapping in the centre. Pin or clip in place.

14

Sew around the outer edge of the cushion, backstitching at the corners to reinforce. Clip the corners, turn right side out and press to finish.
