PIECING THE BLOCKS

Sew a background 1½in square to either side of a centre square. Sew a light blue 1½in x 3½in strip to the top and a dark blue 1½in x 3½in strip to the bottom (Fig 1).

Add background 1½in x 3½in strips to either side of the block, then light and dark blue 1½in x 5½in strips to the top and bottom. Join a background 1½in x 5½in strip to either side. Then finally sew a light and dark blue 1½in x 7½in strip to the top and bottom to finish one block (Fig 2).

Repeat steps 6–7 to make a total of twenty five blocks with long blue sides.
