CORNER-SQUARE TRIANGLES (CST)

-

To sew a Corner-square Triangle (CST), place a square in the corner of a fabric piece, RST. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the square, referring carefully to figures for direction. Sew along the diagonal line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼in and press the piece open to complete.

PIECING THE LIME BLOCKS

29

Join a U CST to the bottom left corner of P. Join O to the left side to form the leaf unit (Fig 7).

30

Join an R CST to each corner of T (Fig 8). Join S to the bottom, then join Q to either side to make the lime unit.

31

Join the leaf unit to the top of the lime unit to complete one lime block. Repeat to make a total of five lime blocks.

PIECING THE STRAWBERRY BLOCKS

32

Join an AA CST to the bottom left and top right corners of EE. Join an AA CST to the top left and bottom right corners of FF (Fig 9). Repeat to make two of each unit.

33

Join the units from step 32 in pairs. Join W to the top of each pair to make two leaf units (Fig 10).

34

Join CC to the bottom long edge of DD. Then join another CC to the right edge (Fig 11). Add a BB CST to the top left corner and an AA CST to the top right. Then add a Y CST to the bottom left and a Z CST to the bottom right corners (Fig 12). Repeat the piecing process in steps 32–34 to make a second strawberry unit.

35

Join a leaf unit to the top of each strawberry unit. Join V to the left of one strawberry and X to the right. Then join V to the right of the remaining strawberry and X to the left (Fig 13).

36

Join the two strawberries to complete the first strawberry block. Repeat steps 32–36 to make a total of five strawberry blocks.

PIECING THE WATERMELON BLOCKS

37

Join a NN CST to both bottom corners of KK (Fig 14). Join LL to either side, then join MM to the bottom (Fig 15). Add a JJ CST to both bottom corners to make the watermelon unit (Fig 16).

38

Join HH to the top of the watermelon and II to the bottom. Then join GG to either side to complete one watermelon block. Repeat to make a total of five watermelon blocks.

PIECING THE BANANA BLOCKS

39

Join a WW to the left of TT. Join SS to the top, then OO to the left side to form the top end unit (Fig 17). Join a WW to the bottom of TT. Join SS to the left, then RR to the top to form the side unit (Fig 18).

40

Join a UU CST to the top left corner of XX, and then a VV CST to the bottom right. Join a TT CST to the top right and bottom left corners to make the banana unit (Fig 19).

41

Join the side unit to the left of the banana unit. Then join the top end unit to the top (Fig 20). Join PP to the bottom, and then join QQ to the right side to complete the banana block. Repeat this process to make a total of five banana blocks.

PIECING THE QUILT TOP

42

Join each of the sets of five blocks into rows, pressing seams open or to one side as preferred. Arrange the rows, referring to the photography and sew together to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

43

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

44

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

45

Quilt as desired. Annie (search Annie Leighs Sew Happy on Facebook) quilted an intersecting circular pattern. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

46

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press. Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
