PREPARING THE HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLES

16

Draw a light pencil line diagonally across the back of a background A 6in square. Place RST with a pink A 6in square and sew ¼in either side of the drawn line. Cut carefully along the drawn line, and press the seam towards the darker fabric for each HST unit. Trim each HST to 5½in square (Fig 1).

17

Repeat step 16 to sew the following number of HST units:

■ Four (4) pink A/background A.

■ Eight (8) pink B/background A.

■ Twelve (12) yellow A/background A.

■ Twenty (20) yellow B/background B.

■ Sixteen (16) orange/background B.

■ Twelve (12) multi B/background B.

■ Eight (8) blue B/background B.

■ Four (4): blue A/background B.

PIECING THE CENTRE

18

Arrange one pink A, two pink B and three yellow A HSTs as shown in Fig 2 and sew together. Then sew a blue A triangle to the top of each column, aligning the left edge. Press seams open and trim the point even with the right edge of the column. Also sew a blue A triangle to the right edge of the last column, aligning the edges at the bottom (Fig 3).

19

Sew the columns together to form a triangle, carefully matching seams to form a triangle block (Fig 4). Press seams open or to one side as preferred.

20

Repeat steps 18–19 to make a total of four triangle blocks. Sew the triangle blocks into pairs, then sew the pairs together to complete the centre square (Fig 5).

ADDING THE CENTRE BORDERS

21

Press the pieced centre well. Then pin one navy A 2in x 29¼in border strip to the bottom, matching the mid points and end points. Sew in place and press the seam towards the border strip. Repeat the process to add the other Navy A strip to the top.

22

Using the same method from step 21, join the navy A 2in x 32½in strips to either side of the centre.

23

Repeat the process in steps 21–22 to add the remaining borders. First add the background A 32¼in and 34¾in long strips. Then add the navy B strips, followed by the remaining background A strips. Finally add the navy C strips (Fig 6).

PIECING THE TRIANGLE CORNER BLOCKS

24

Using the blue A, blue B, multi B, orange and yellow B HSTs, arrange in columns as shown in Fig 7. Sew the units into columns.

25

Sew a multi A triangle to the top of each column, and the right-hand side of the last column. Then sew the columns together, using the same process outlined in steps 18–19 (Fig 8).

26

Repeat steps 24–25 to make a total of four triangle corner blocks. Trim each of the triangles along the long diagonal edges, ¼in above all of the background triangle points.

PIECING THE QUILT TOP

27

Fold the quilt centre in half vertically and horizontally, and finger press to mark the centre along each outer edge. Take one triangle corner block and place RST along one side. Align the point of the centre background triangle with the marked point. The points of the triangle block will overhang at each end. Sew in place and press well.

28

Repeat the process in step 27 to join a triangle block to the opposite side. Trim the edges of the triangles even with the sides of the quilt centre. Then repeat the process to join triangle corner blocks to the remaining edges.

FINISHING THE QUILT

29

Cut the backing fabric in half along the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

30

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together. 31

Quilt as desired, Paula chose an all-over floral quilting pattern from Dastardly Line for her longarm quilter (@worktownquilts) to use. It was quilted with a variegated 50wt Aurifil thread.

32

Once you have finished quilting the top, trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt to measure 60in square. 33

Sew the binding strips together using diagonal seams at a 45-degree angle. Press the seams open, and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

34

Attach the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
