13

Sew the columns together to form the triangle, pressing seams open.

14

Repeat steps 12–13 to make a second triangle block.

MAKING THE STRIPED BLOCK

15

Take a pink A strip and make a mark ¾in from one edge of the strip. Place a background strip RST with the pink strip, aligning the end of the strip with the mark on the pink strip. Sew together along the top long edge. Press the seam open.

16

Continue adding the strips, offsetting the strips by ¾in to create a stepped unit. First add the blue B strip to the background strip, then a navy strip. Then add another blue B strip, background strip and pink A strip.

17

Trim one edge using the 45-degree line on your quilt ruler (Fig D). Trim the other edge in the same way, with the diagonal going in the same direction, referring to Fig E.

ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION TOP

18

Sew the triangles to either side of the striped block, referring to the photography for placement. Start with the left triangle, and finger press in half to mark the centre of the diagonal line. Repeat with the striped block, then sew in place, matching the centre points. The striped block will extend beyond the triangle at either end.

19

Trim the striped block in line with the triangle block at the top and bottom. Then sew the second triangle block in place, matching the centre point as before.

FINISHING THE CUSHION

20

Press the cushion top well and place right side up on top of the batting. Baste in place and quilt as desired. Paula quilted straight lines, echoing the lines of the striped block. Trim away excess batting and trim to 12½in x 20½in, centring the cushion top. 21

Press under ½in twice along one short edge of a backing piece, enclosing the raw edge. Topstitch in place. Repeat to hem one edge of the other backing piece.

22

With the cushion top right side down, place the two backing pieces on top, right side up. Align raw edges with the hemmed edges overlapping in the centre. Baste in place around the outer edge.

23

Sew the binding strips together using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, WST and press. Attach the binding to the front and finish as you would a quilt.
