PIECING THE FLOWER BLOCKS

11

Take one half circle piece and one half arc piece. Fold in half and finger press to mark the centre of the curve. Place the two pieces RST with the half arc on top. Match the creases and pin in the centre and at the ends. Ease the fabric between these points and pin in place (Fig A). Sew together along the curve. Press the seam open.

12

Trim the block to 15½in x 7½in, leaving ¼in above the top of the curve and trimming evenly from each side (Fig B).

13

Repeat steps 11–12 with each of the half circle and half arc pieces to make a total of seven flower blocks.

PIECING THE LEAF BLOCKS

14

Take one leaf piece and one leaf arc piece. Finger press, then pin and sew as in step 11 (Fig C). Repeat with a second leaf arc piece on the other side of the leaf. Trim to 7½in square, making sure to leave ¼in allowance outside each point of the leaf.

15

Repeat to make a second matching leaf unit. Join the two units with a 1½in x 7½in piece, rotating the blocks to make the leaf pattern.

16

Repeat steps 14–15 to make a total of sixteen leaf blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

17

Arrange the leaf and flower blocks in columns, referring to the Layout Diagram. Sew the blocks together in columns. Join the background 15 in x 21 in piece to top of the left column. Join the background 15 in x 7 in piece to the top of the right column.

18

Join the columns with 3 in x 63 in background strips in between. Then add another strip to either side. Press seams towards the background strips.

19

Join the 3 in x 57 in strips to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top, again pressing seams towards these background strips.

FINISHING THE QUILT

20

Cut the backing fabric in half across the WOF. Remove the selvedges and sew together along the long edge using a in seam. Press the seam open.

21

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down and the batting on top, smoothing out any bumps. Place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

22

Quilt as desired. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

23

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold and press the binding in half with wrong sides together.

24

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Press the binding away from the quilt and fold to the back. Use binding clips to hold the binding in place as you hand or machine sew it down to finish.
