MAKING THE HST UNITS

8

Place a Fabric A and background square RST. Mark one diagonal line on the wrong side of the lighter square. Sew ¼in from either side of the line. Cut along the marked line, press each unit open and neatly trim to 4½in square.

9

Repeat the process outlined in step 8, pairing each of the Fabric A and B squares with a background square to make a total of four Fabric A HSTs and twelve Fabric B HSTs.

MAKING THE CUSHION TOP

10

Arrange the HSTs in four rows of four, referring to the photography for placement. Sew together in rows, then sew the rows together, carefully matching seams.

11

Make a quilt sandwich with the 18in square lining piece, batting and cushion top. Baste and quilt as desired. Trim away the excess batting and lining fabric.

FINISHING THE CUSHION

12

Make a quilt sandwich with one lining, batting and backing fabric piece. The lining and batting will be larger than the backing piece. Baste and quilt as desired. Square up to 16½in x 10½in, trimming away excess batting and lining in the process. Repeat the process to make a second quilted backing panel.

13

Take one binding piece and press in half lengthwise, WST. Unfold and press the long raw edges in to meet the centre crease. Refold in half and press. Sandwich one long edge of one backing panel inside the folded binding strip. Clip in place, then topstitch. Trim excess binding from the sides of the panel. Repeat with the remaining binding strip and backing panel.

14

With the cushion front right side up, place both backing panels on top right side down. Align the raw edges around the sides, with the bound edges overlapping in the middle. Pin or clip in place, then sew around the outer edge.

15

Zigzag stitch around the outer edge within the seam allowance to finish and strengthen the edges. Clip the corners, turn right side out and press.
