in Snow by Robert Kaufman.

MAKING THE PLANT MAT

1Cut out one Large Diamond from each of the print fabrics, using the template. Mark the seam allowance as outlined in steps 2–3 of the tutorial.

2Sew all the diamonds together creating a hexagon shape, following steps 4–7. Baste the pieced hexagon onto the batting.

3Quilt as desired. Kate used a Hera marker to mark initial lines, and then quilted an echoing pattern across two diamonds using the walking foot on her sewing machine (Figs L–M).

4Cut away the excess batting from the sides of the hexagon. Place the quilted hexagon right sides together with the backing fabric. Sew around the outer edge, leaving a turning gap along one straight side. Trim away the excess backing fabric.

5Trim the batting from the seam allowance along the side with the turning gap (Fig N). Also clip the corners (Fig O). Turn right side out, press, and ladder stitch the turning gap closed.

Neatly topstitch around the outer edge of the mat to finish.

MAKING THE COASTER

6Use the Small Diamond template to cut your print fabrics, and follow steps 1–5 of the Plant Mat instructions to make your matching coaster.
