MAKING THE CUSHION FRONT

6 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each B, C, D and G piece. Follow steps 7– 8 from the main quilt instructions to make one bow unit. Then follow steps 10–13 to make one star block.

7 Sew the 3¼in x 13½in background strips to either side of the block. Then sew the 3¼in x 19in background strips to the top and bottom.

8 Layer the lining square, batting and cushion top to make a quilt sandwich. Baste and quilt as desired. Satomi quilted a cross hatch pattern across the cushion. Trim away the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the cushion front.

ATTACHING THE ZIPPER AND COMPLETING THE CUSHION

9 Mark 1½in from either end at the bottom of the cushion front, on the wrong side. Place the cushion front and backing fabric square RST. Using a ½in

seam allowance, sew from one corner to the first mark, backstitching to secure (Fig A). Repeat at the other bottom corner.

10 Sew between the two marks using a in seam allowance, and a long basting stitch; Satomi recommends 4.0mm or larger (Fig B). Press the seam open.

11 With the cushion and backing fabric right side down, place the zipper face down along the seam. Centre the zip that so it runs along the basted part of the seam. Pin in place (Fig C).

12 Stitch along one side of the zip using a zipper foot, backstitching at the beginning of the seam to secure. When you approach the zip pull, stop sewing with the needle down. Lift the presser foot and slide the zip pull out of the way. Continue sewing, working your way across the top, down the other side of the zip and across the bottom.

13 Turn the cushion to the right side, and remove the basting threads carefully, using a seam ripper (Fig D). Open the zipper halfway.

14 Place the cushion top and backing fabric RST again. Sew around the remaining three sides using a in seam allowance. Sew around the edges again using a zigzag stitch within the seam allowance. Clip the corners, turn right side out and firmly press to finish.
