PIECING THE CAR BLOCK

11

Add an F CST to the top left and bottom left corner of S. Join D to the left side of S. Then join A to the top of S to form the left tree unit (Fig 1).

12

Add an F CST to the top left corner of a T piece and add a G CST to the bottom left corner of the T piece. Make three, then join them all together. Join B to the top to form the middle tree unit (Fig 2).

13

Add the H CST to the top left corner of Q and add a G CST to the bottom of Q. Add an F CST to the top left corner of R and a G CST to the bottom left corner. Join I to the top of U and G to the bottom. Join the three pieced units, then join C to the top to form the bottom tree unit (Fig 3). Join the three tree units together, then join E to the right side to complete the tree (Fig 4).

14

Take two K and three W pieces and join them together in a row, alternating the pieces. Join W to the top. Then join P to the left and C to the right to form the top of the car (Fig 5). 15

Join V to the left of X and GG to the right. Then join J to each end to form the centre of the car (Fig 6).

16

Take HH an add an EE CST to each corner, working one corner at a time. Join DD to either side. Join a CC CST to the top corners of FF. Sew this to the top of the HH unit. Join a G CST to the bottom corners of another FF unit. Sew to the bottom of HH to form one wheel (Fig 7). Repeat to make a second wheel.

17

Add a CC CST to the bottom right corner of an O piece, then join AA to the right edge. Sew K to the bottom to form the front bumper. Add A CC CST to the bottom left corner of O, then join Z to the left side. Sew M to the bottom to form the back bumper (Fig 8). Join BB to the top of L. Sew a wheel unit to either side, then add the front bumper to the left and back bumper to the right to form the bottom of the car (Fig 9).

18

Join the top, middle and bottom car units.

Then sew N to the bottom (Fig 10). Then sew the tree to the top of the car to complete the centre of the cushion front.

PIECING THE SCALLOP BORDER

19

Add a KK CST to the top left and top right corner of MM. Join JJ to the top to make one scallop block (Fig 11). Repeat the process to make a total of sixteen scallop blocks. Sew the scallop blocks together in rows of four.

20

Sew a row of scallop blocks to either side of the cushion centre, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement. Sew a LL square to either end of the remaining scallop rows. Sew these to the top and bottom of the cushion centre.

ASSEMBLING THE PILLOW COVER

21

Make a quilt sandwich with the lining fabric, batting and cushion front on top. Baste and quilt as desired. Gracey quilted a continuous diamond pattern. Trim away excess lining and batting and square up the cushion front.

22

Press under in along one long edge of a backing rectangle. Press under again, enclosing the raw edge, and topstitch in place to form a hem. Repeat for the other backing piece.

23

With the cushion front right side down, arrange the backing rectangles on top, both right side up. Align the raw edges around the outer edge, with the hemmed edges overlapping in the centre. Pin or clip in place. Baste around the outer edge to secure. 24

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.

25

Sew the binding to the right side of the cushion as you would a quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the cushion and hand stitch in place to finish.
