PIECING THE 2-IN-1 HST UNITS

4 Place a in square each of Fabric F and 10

Fabric G right sides together. Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on one side of your paired squares, using tailor's chalk or another removable fabric pen.

11 Sew ¼in from either side of the line and cut along the marked line (Fig 1). Press the seams towards the darker fabric and trim each unit to 31/2in square.

12 Repeat steps 11–12 to make the following HST units:

■ Four (4) Fabric F/G HSTs.

■ Two (2) Fabric F/J HSTs.

■ Two (2) Fabric G/H HSTs.

■ Four (4) Fabric H/J HSTs.

13 Repeat steps 11–12 pairing each of the remaining Fabric E, F, G, H, I and J 4in squares with a background square.

MAKING BLOCK 1

Take two each of Fabric E and I 31/2in 14

squares, four background 31/2in squares and your prepared HSTs. Arrange as shown in the Block 1 Layout Diagram, paying careful attention to orientation.

15 Sew the units together in rows, pressing seams in opposite directions in each row. Then sew the rows together, nesting seams between units. Press seams open or to one side to complete one Block 1.

PIECING THE 8-IN-1 HST UNITS

16 Place an 8in square each of Fabric A and Fabric E right sides together. Mark both diagonals on the wrong side of one of your paired squares using tailor's chalk or another removable fabric pen. Sew 1/4in from either side of the lines (Fig 2).

17 Cut the square vertically as well as horizontally, then cut along the marked diagonal lines to make eight units. Press the seams towards the darker fabric and trim each unit to 31/2in square (Fig 3).

18 Repeat steps 16–17 to make the following HST units:

■ Sixteen (16) Fabric A/E HSTs.

■ Eight (8) Fabric A/C HSTs.

■ Sixteen (16) Fabric B/C HSTs.

■ Eight (8) Fabric B/E HSTs.

■ Sixteen (16) Fabric B/D HSTs.

■ Eight (8) Fabric B/J HSTs.

■ Eight (8) Fabric D/F HSTs.

■ Sixteen (16) Fabric F/J HSTs.

19 Repeat steps 16–17, pairing each of the

remaining Fabric A–F, Fabric I and Fabric J 8in squares with a background square.

PIECING BLOCKS 2 AND 3

20 Use the same process in steps 14–15 to make each of Blocks 2 and 3, referring to their corresponding Block Layout Diagrams to see the correct placement. Repeat the process to make four Block 2 and then make four Block 3.

PIECING THE QUILT TOP

21 Arrange the blocks in three rows of three, referring to the Layout Diagram. Note that in the centre row, Block 3 is rotated in order to achieve the pattern.

22 Sew the blocks together in rows, pressing seams in opposite directions for each row. Sew the rows together, nesting seams between blocks. Press seams open.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

23 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a 1/2in seam. Press the seam open. Trim to measure approx 63in square.

24 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste all of the layers together using your preferred method.

25 Quilt as desired. Cait quilted a diamond design, quilting a crosshatch at 60-degrees, then quilted another cross-hatch at 30-degrees, making sure the lines intersect to echo the diagonals of the Half-square Triangles. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and then square up the quilt.

26 Sew the six 21/2in x WOF binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, with wrong sides together, and press.

27 Sew the joined binding strip to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Then fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure temporarily with pins or clips. Finally, hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.
