■ Six (6) Template A, cutting half the pieces with the template printed side up and half with the template printed side down to create mirror image pairs.

2 From each of the aqua and dark blue fabrics cut: ■ Four (4) Template A, cutting half the pieces with the template printed side up and half with the template printed side down to create mirror image pairs.

3 From the bright pink fabric cut:

■ Two (2) 2in x 18in.

4 From the background fabric cut:

■ Two (2) 2in x 18in.

■ One (1) 31/2in x WOF. Subcut thirteen

(13) Template B.

■ Three (3) 7/8in x WOF. Subcut thirteen

(13) 7/8in x 3in and ten (10) 7/8in x 5in.

■ One (1) 7/8in x WOF (sashing).

■ Two (2) 91/2in squares. Cut each square in half on both diagonals in order to make a total of eight side setting triangles.

■ Two (2) 5in squares. Cut each square in half along one diagonal in order to make a total of four corner triangles.

5 From the binding fabric cut:

■ Three (3) 21/2in x WOF.

PIECING THE BLOCKS

6 Sew each pink 2in x 18in strip to a background 2in x 18in strip along the long edges. Press the seam towards the pink strip. Subcut thirteen 2in x 31/2in rectangle units from the strip sets.

7 Follow the process in steps 7–12 from the quilt instructions to make a total of thirteen blocks. Use the 7/8in x 3in background pieces during the process of step 10 and trim each block to 5in square.

ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION FRONT

8 Arrange your blocks in rows, referring to the Layout Diagram. Once you are happy with the layout, sew the blocks together, adding a 7/8in x 5in background strip in between each of the blocks.

9 Sew a 7/8in x 5in background strip below the Row 1 block. Then sew another strip to the top of the Row 5 block.

10 Take your 7/8in x WOF strip, and sew it to the bottom of Row 2. Trim the strip even with the ends of the row. Sew the remainder of the strip to the top of Row 4, once again trimming it so that it is even with the ends of the row.

11 Sew the side setting triangles to either end of Rows 1, 2, 4 and 5. Sew the rows together, carefully matching seams in between each of the rows. Then sew the corner triangles to either end of Row 3 as well as to the top and the bottom.

12 Square up the cushion front to 201/2in square, trimming evenly from each edge.

FINISHING YOUR CUSHION

13 Make a quilt sandwich by laying your backing fabric right side down, then your batting and cushion top right side up. Baste and quilt as desired. Lynett quilted horizontal straight lines 1in apart.

14 Trim off excess backing and batting and square up your cushion top.

15 Take one backing piece and press under 1/2in twice along one long edge, to enclose the raw edge. Topstitch in place to hem. Repeat with the other backing piece.

16 Lay your quilted cushion top right side down and place the two backing pieces right sides up with the finished edges overlapping in the centre and the raw edges lining up with the raw edges of the cushion top. Pin or clip in place, then baste around the cushion's outer edge.

17 Sew the three 21/2in x WOF binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, with wrong sides together, trim and press the seam.

18 Sew the binding to your pillow, lining up raw edges. Then fold the binding over and machine or hand stitch in place around the edges to finish the pillow.
