- Sarah Griffiths LP&Q Senior Technical Editor Sarah spends her downtime daydreaming about more quilts than she could ever actually sew! spindleandshears

NOTES

■ Seam allowances are 1/4in, unless otherwise noted.

■ Press seams to one side, unless otherwise instructed.

■ RST = right sides together.

■ WOF = width of fabric.

■ HRT = Half-rectangle Triangle.

FABRICS USED

■ Print fabrics are from the Jungle Paradise collection by Stacy Iest Hsu for Moda Fabrics.

■ Solid fabrics are Off White and Pomegranate from Bella Solids by Moda Fabrics.

CUTTING OUT

1 Follow steps 1– 6 of the HRT instructions on p6 to cut the required HRT triangles, as listed below. Make sure to cut half right diagonal pieces and half left diagonal pieces for each set of units, using a folded strip as is outlined in step 6 of the instructions.

2 From each of four of the green prints cut:

■ One (1) 61/2in x 22in. Subcut four (4) HRT triangles from each strip (two right diagonal and two left diagonal).

3 From each of the two remaining green prints cut:

■ One (1) 61/2in x 22in. Subcut two (2) HRT triangles from each strip (one right diagonal and one left diagonal).

4 From each of two pink and two orange prints cut:

■ One (1) 41/2in x 22in. Subcut eight from each strip (8) HRT triangles (four right diagonal and four left diagonal).

5 From each of the remaining two pink and two orange prints cut:

■ One (1) 41/2in x 22in. Subcut from each strip six (6) HRT triangles (three right diagonal and three left diagonal).

6 From the background fabric cut:

■ One (1) 61/2in x WOF. Subcut twenty (20) HRT triangles (ten right diagonal and ten left diagonal).

■ Three (3) 41/2in x WOF. Subcut fifty six (56) HRT triangles (twenty eight right diagonal and twenty eight left diagonal).

■ Four (4) 11/2in x 81/2in.

■ Two (2) 11/2in x 301/2in.

PIECING THE CUSHION TOP

7 Piece the HRT units, pairing each coloured piece with a background piece, following steps 7– 8 of the HRT

instructions on p6. You should have a total of twenty large HRTs and fifty six small HRTs. Refer to the Layout Diagram for orientation as you piece your cushion top.

8 Arrange the large HRTs in two rows of ten. Sew them together in rows, then sew the two rows together in order to form the centre of the cushion top.

9 Arrange the small pink HRTs in two rows of fourteen. Sew them together in rows, then sew the rows together. Sew a 11/2in x 81/2in background rectangle to either end. Sew this to the top of the large HRT rows.

10 Repeat the process detailed in step 9 to sew the small yellow HRTs in rows, and add them to the bottom of the cushion top. Then sew the 11/2in x 301/2in background strips to the top and the bottom in order to finish the cushion top.

FINISHING THE CUSHION

11 Make a quilt sandwich with the cushion top, batting and lining. Quilt as desired. Sarah quilted a diagonal arrow design using her walking foot. Trim away excess batting and lining, squaring up the cushion top so that it measures 301/2in square.

12 Place the backing fabric square RST with the quilted cushion top, and pin or clip along the bottom edge. Mark 6in from each side along the bottom edge. Sew from the side to the first marked point, backstitching at the mark, using a 1/2in seam allowance. Repeat at the other edge.

13 Open out the cushion front and backing fabric, and press the seam open. Also press the unsewn portion of the bottom edge. Centre the zip in this opening, so the teeth run along the gap between the front and back. Pin in place from the front, or if you prefer you can use a few dots of washable glue to secure.

14 Topstitch down one side of the zip on your machine, using a zipper foot, starting a little above the gap in the cushion. Stop with the needle down, just below the opening, and pivot to sew across the zipper. Pivot again with the needle down at the other side, and sew up the zip. Finish by sewing across the top of the gap to form a rectangle around the zip.

15 Open the zip at least halfway. Bring the cushion front and the cushion back right sides together again. Sew all the way around the remaining three sides of the cushion, using a 1/2in seam allowance. Then turn the cushion right side out, pushing it out through the zip opening. Finally, press in order to finish the cushion.
