4

Take one each of the Fabric A–E squares and four Fabric F squares. Arrange as shown in Fig A, using Fabric F for the side squares and the dark blue Fabric E square at the centre.

5

Sew the squares together in three rows, pressing the seams toward the Fabric F squares in each row. Sew all of the rows together, carefully matching the seams. Press the nine-patch well, and check that it measures 11in square.

6

Cut the nine-patch into quarters

(Fig B). Use your quilt ruler to align with the seam lines, making sure your cuts are straight. Measure halfway from the sides of the centre square (1¾in) for the first cut.

Then, without disturbing the pieces, rotate your ruler and cut the other direction in the exact same way.

7

Swap the top left and bottom right quarters, so that these two full corner squares are now in the centre (Fig C). Sew together the four quarters in order to complete the disappearing nine-patch, as demonstrated in Fig D.

8

Repeat steps 4–7 to make a total of nine disappearing nine-patch blocks, keeping the coloured squares in the same positions throughout, so that the blocks are identical.

9

Arrange the blocks into three rows of three, referring to the Layout Diagram. Keep each block in the same orientation to achieve Paula’s pattern.

10

Sew the blocks into rows, pressing seams open or to one side. Then sew all of the rows together, matching seams between blocks, to finish the quilt top.

11

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

12

Quilt as desired. Paula chose simple straight lines creating a cross hatch design. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

13

Sew the Fabric E binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

14

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.
