■ Eight (8) 3½in squares.

3

From Fabric C cut:

■ Eight (8) 2#/ 8in squares. Cut each square in half diagonally to create sixteen (16) 2#/ 8in triangles.

■ Twenty four (24) 2in squares.

4

From Fabric D cut:

■ Eight (8) 2#/ 8in squares. Cut each square in half diagonally to create sixteen (16) 2#/ 8in triangles.

PIECING UNIT A

5

Take two Fabric D and two Fabric C 2in squares. Arrange and sew together in a four-patch, alternating the squares (Fig 1).

6

Repeat the process in step 5 to make a total of eight Unit A.

PIECING UNITS B AND C

7

Take one Fabric D 2in square and two Fabric C 2#/ 8in triangles. Sew one triangle to the side of the square, then sew the second one to the top. Sew a Fabric A 37/ 8in triangle along the diagonal edge, carefully matching the centres (Fig 2).

8

Repeat step 7 to make eight Unit B. Repeat the process again to make eight Unit C, using a Fabric C square and two Fabric D small triangles as shown in Fig 3.

PIECING THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE BLOCK

9

Take two each of Unit A, Unit B and Unit C, and two Fabric A 3½in squares. Arrange as shown in Fig 4, taking care to place units correctly to achieve the checkerboard pattern. Sew the units in rows, then sew the rows together to complete one bottom half. 10

Repeat the process in step 9 to make a total of four bottom halves.

PIECING THE TOP HALF OF THE BLOCK AND FINISHING

11

Take two Fabric A 3½in squares and two Fabric B 3½in squares. Then proceed to mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of the four squares. 12

Place one marked Fabric B square at one end of the Fabric A 3½in x 6½in piece, RST. Sew along the marked line, trim ¼in from the line and then press open. Repeat this process with the other square at the other end of the Fabric A piece (Fig 5). Then sew an unmarked Fabric A 3½in square to either end.

13

Repeat step 12 to add Fabric A corners to the end of a Fabric B 3½in x 12½in piece, taking care to align the squares as shown (Fig 6). Sew this unit to the bottom of the unit from step 12 to complete the top half of the block.

14

Repeat steps 11–13 to make a total of four top halves. Sew each top half to a bottom half to make four Block D.
