CUTTING OUT

From the binding fabric cut: 1

■ Three (3) 2in x 22in.

From the remaining fabric, using the

2

templates and referring to the Layout Diagram, trim your fabrics for each section of Templates A–R. Make sure each piece is at least 1/4in larger than the section they cover all the way around. Sleeve fabrics will be used in Sections 1A, 1G and 1M. Nail fabrics will be use in Sections 1E, 2D and 4D; 1K, 2J and 4J; 2Q, 2P and 4P.

PIECING THE SECTIONS

Take the Section A template and place 3

the fabric right side up on the unprinted side of the template against Section 1A. Make sure that it covers the whole section plus at least 1/4in all the way around. Pin in place, making sure not to pin along the seam line between Sections 1A and 2A.

Take the fabric piece for Section 2A and 4

place it right side down on top of Section 1A. Make sure that when you fold back along the seam line, Section 2A will be covered entirely by the fabric, plus at least 1/4in all round. Pin in place.

Using a short stitch length, turn the

5

template over to the printed side and stitch along the line between Sections 1A and 2A. Take extra care to make sure that Section 2A will be covered entirely by the fabric when pressed open.

Fold the paper template along the

6

seam and trim the seam allowance down to 1/4in, making sure you do not cut the paper. Unfold the template, turn the work over to the fabric side, fold the Section 2A fabric open and then press flat.

Repeat steps 4– 6 to piece the remaining 7

sections on the template in numerical order. Once complete, trim along the outer dotted line of the template.

Repeat the process in steps 4–7 to 8

piece template Sections B–R.

JOINING THE SECTIONS

Return your machine to a normal stitch 9

length. Join Sections B and C together to create the wrist (Figs A–B). Remove the paper from the seam allowance by tearing along the seam line. Press the seam open.

Using the same method as in step 9, 10

join sections D and E together in order to create the hand (Figs C– D). Remove the paper from the seam allowance only and then press the seam open.

Join Section A to the bottom of BC. 11

Then join F to the top of DE, as shown in Fig E. Join the two sections together in order to complete one hand.

Using the same process outlined in 12

steps 9–11, join the other two hands together as follows. First, join Sections J and K, then join L to the top. Join Sections H and I, then join G to the bottom. After this, join the two sections together.

Join Sections P and Q, then join R to 13

the top. Join Sections N and O, then join M to the bottom. Join the two sections to complete the third hand.

Join the three hands together to

14

complete the quilt top, making sure to carefully match points and block ends. Remove the paper templates from the back of the block and press well.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

Press the quilt top and backing well. 15

Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

Quilt as desired. Nadine quilted the 16

details of the hands to emphasise the fingers and peace signs and left the background un-quilted so that the hands stand out. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt so that it measures 101/2in square.

Sew the binding strips together

17

end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

Sew the binding to the right side of the 18

quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
