PIECING THE CUSHION TOP
Follow steps 4– 6 of the quilt instructions 5
to make the HST units, using the 5in squares and trimming each HST to 4½in square. Then add the Fabric A corners as in steps 7– 8, using the 2in squares.
Arrange the units in four rows of four, 6
referring to the Layout Diagram, paying careful attention to the orientation of each unit to achieve the pattern. Sew together in rows, then sew the rows together to complete the cushion top.
FINISHING THE CUSHION
Layer the lining, batting, and cushion 7
top to make a quilt sandwich. Baste them together and quilt as desired. Trim away excess batting and lining.
Press under 1in along one long edge 8
of each backing piece. Press under 1in again in order to enclose the raw edge, and then topstitch in place.
Place the two backing pieces wrong
9
sides together with the quilted cushion top. Align the raw edges around the sides, with the hemmed edges overlapping in the centre. Pin, then baste in place.
Sew the binding strips together using 10
a diagonal seam. Press the seam open and trim away the dog ears.
Fold the joined binding strip in half
11
lengthways, wrong sides together, and press. Sew to the right side of the cushion, creating a neat mitre at each corner.
Fold the binding strip over to the 12
back of the cushion and secure temporarily with pins and clips. Finally, hand or machine stitch in place around the edge in order to finish the cushion.
