PIECING THE TOTE BAG FRONT 9

Follow steps 5– 6 and 8–10 of the quilt instructions to make the HRT units. You will pair each Fabric B and D 5in x 71/2in rectangle with a Fabric A rectangle, for a total of four Fabric A/B HRTs and two Fabric A/D HRTs.

10

Follow steps 11–12 of the quilt instructions to make one block. You will have one leftover HRT unit of each fabric pairing. You can discard it, or save it for another future project.

11

Sew a Fabric A 21/2in x 121/2in strip to either side of the block. Then sew a Fabric A 21/2in x 161/2in strip to the top and to the bottom of the block.

12

Sew a Fabric D 11/2in x 161/2in strip to the top and to the bottom of the block. k. Then sew a Fabric C 11/2in x 161/2in strip to the top and to the bottom of the block.

13

Baste the pieced front onto one of the batting pieces, centrally and right side up. Quilt as desired. Kathleen used a simple horizontal zig-zag stitch. Trim away excess batting and square up to measure 161/2in x 201/2in. Repeat to quilt the backing piece on the other piece of batting.

ASSEMBLING THE TOTE BAG 14

With the quilted back right side up, place one webbing piece, aligning the short edges with the top, 3in from each side. Pin, then baste in place (Fig A).

15

Place one lining piece RST with the back, sandwiching the handle in between (Fig B). Sew along the top edge, backstitching at each end. Then press the seam open.

16

Repeat the process detailed in steps 14–15 with the quilted front. Place the two panels RST, so the front and back are facing and the linings are facing. Make sure the seams line up at the sides (Fig C). Pin or clip in place around the edge.

17

Sew around the outer edge, using a 1/2in seam allowance and leaving a 10in turning gap in one side of the lining. Backstitch at the beginning and at the end of the seam to secure your stitches.

18

At one corner, bring the side and bottom seam together, creating a triangle. Finger press the seams open, pinning in place (Fig D). Mark a line 21/2in from the point. Stitch along the marked line, backstitching at each end. Then trim away the triangle, leaving a ¼in seam allowance, to box the corner (Fig E).

19

Working one corner at a time, repeat the process detailed in step 18 in order to box all four of the corners.

20

Turn the bag right side out through the gap you left in the lining. After this, proceed to hand or machine stitch the turning gap closed. Push the lining down inside the bag and press in order to finish.
