MAKING THE CUSHION TOP 7

Follow steps 3–5 of the tutorial, using the Fabric A frame squares and background squares to prepare the frame units. You will have thirty six units.

8

Arrange the units in six rows of six, creating a diagonal pattern, following step 11 of the tutorial. Sew the units in rows, then proceed to neatly sew the rows together, taking care to keep the diagonals in the correct orientation.

9

Follow the process in steps 12–13 of the tutorial to finish the quilt top. Use the Fabric C, D and E 37/ 8in squares for the focus centre squares, referring to the photography for placement.

10

Then use the Fabric B 4½in squares for the side triangles and the 31/ 8in squares for the corners.

11

Sew the Fabric B 1½in x 18½in strips to the top and bottom. Then sew the 1½in x 20½in strips to either side to finish the cushion top.

FINISHING THE CUSHION 12

Place the finished cushion top onto the batting square and quilt as desired. Paula quilted straight lines across the border for a simple finish. Trim away excess batting and square up to 20½in square.

13

Place the 14in x 20½in cushion backing pieces onto the corresponding batting pieces and quilt as desired. Paula chose a simple crosshatch design. Trim away excess batting and square up.

14

Take one of your Fabric F 2½in x 20½in strips, and press it in half lengthways, wrong sides together. Place on top of one quilted backing piece, aligning the raw edges with one long edge. Sew in place, fold to the back and topstitch in place to bind the edge. Repeat with the other strip and backing piece.

15

Place the cushion top and the cushion backing pieces right sides together so that the bound edges are overlapping, and so the outer edges all align. Neatly sew around the outer edge with a 1/4in seam. Turn the cushion cover right side out and press to finish.
