Take the first 2in x 2½in swatch fabric rectangle and sew a 2½in x ¾in white rectangle to the left and right-hand sides, as shown in Fig A. Sew a 2½in x ¾in white rectangle to the top and a 2½in in x 1¼in white rectangle to the bottom (Fig B). 7

Repeat step 6 to add borders to all six swatch scraps (Fig C). Arrange the swatches into two rows of three. Sew into rows with a 1½in x 3½in background rectangle in-between each swatch, as shown in Fig D.

8

Join the two rows together by sewing the 1½in x 8½in background fabric piece in the middle (Fig E). Sew a 1½in x 8½in background fabric piece to the top and bottom, as shown in Fig F. Finish by sewing a 1¾in x 9½in background fabric piece to the left and right-hand sides, as shown in Fig G.

9

Place the finished top onto a batting piece and then quilt as desired. After quilting, add the names of the swatches. Paula used an alphabet stitch on her machine to write the names, but you could free motion or hand stitch as preferred (Fig H).

10

Repeat step 9 with the back panel. Paula added wavy quilting lines in threads that matched the swatch fabrics. Trim away excess batting from both the front and back panels, squaring up to measure 9½in x 11in.

11

Place the front panel right side up and place the zip at the top of the front panel so that the top edges match up, ensuring the zip teeth are facing down. Place a lining fabric piece on top of the front and zip so that the right sides are facing together, and the top edges are matched up. Then clip or pin in place (Fig I).

12

Sew the zip in place by sewing about ¼in away from the zip teeth. Press the front and the lining away from the zip, avoiding pressing the zip teeth.

13

Repeat the process in steps 11–12 to sew the quilted back and remaining lining piece to the other side of the zip. Open the zip halfway and trim excess zip tape from the ends. 14

Arrange the layers so the front and back panels are right sides together and the two linings are right sides together. The zip will be in the middle. Use a clip to make sure that the zip tape is down towards the lining fabric. This will help give you neat corners.

15

Sew along the sides of the pouch, being especially careful as you sew over the zip. Place your hand inside the open outer fabrics and make sure the zip is in an open position. Sew along the remaining edge of the outer layers. Leave the bottom of the lining unsewn.

16

Turn the pouch right side out through the lining. Push out the corners to shape the pouch. Turn the raw edges of the lining to the inside and press. Stitch the gap closed, stitching by hand or machine. Push the lining to the inside to finish.
