MAKING THE PIECED STRIPS
Sew five Fabric D and four Fabric I
9
11/2in squares in an alternating pattern.
Repeat this process using five Fabric E and four Fabric I squares (Fig 1). Repeat to make two of each strip.
Sew two Fabric G and two Fabric I 10
11/2in squares in an alternating pattern. Sew one 11/2in x 31/2in Fabric B strip along the Fabric I shorter edge as shown in Fig 2. Make a second identical strip.
Repeat the process in step 10 using two 11
Fabric H and I squares, and then sewing a Fabric F strip to the end (Fig 3).
Sew three Fabric G and two Fabric I 12
11/2in squares in an alternating pattern. Repeat this process using three Fabric H and two Fabric I squares (Fig 4). Repeat to make two of each strip.
Sew one Fabric A and one Fabric I 13
11/2in square together. Then sew one Fabric E and one Fabric I 11/2in square together, as shown in Fig 5. Repeat this process to make two of each strip.
ASSEMBLING THE BLOCKS
Refer to Figs 7–10 of the quilt
14
instructions when assembling the first block, as follows. Join a Fabric I 11/2in x 21/2in strip to the right side of the Fabric A/I strip. Then proceed to sew a Fabric C 11/2in x 21/2in strip to the top side.
Sew a Fabric C, I and G 11/2in x 31/2in 15
strip to the right edge. Then sew a Fabric I 11/2in x 51/2in strip to the top, followed by the Fabric G/I strip.
Sew a Fabric I and Fabric B 11/2in x 16
51/2in strip to the right edge. Then sew a Fabric I 11/2in x 71/2in strip to the top, followed by the Fabric B/I/G strip.
Sew a Fabric I and Fabric D 11/2in x 17
71/2in strip to the right. Then sew a Fabric I 11/2in x 91/2in strip to the top, followed by the Fabric D/I strip.
Repeat the process in steps 14–17 18
to make a second block in the same colourway. Use the same process in steps 14–17 to piece two blocks in the second colourway, referring to Fig 11 of the quilt instructions for colour placement.
ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP
Arrange the blocks in two rows of two, 19
referring to the Layout Diagram for correct placement. Carefully check the different rotations of the blocks. Sew the blocks in pairs, with a Fabric I 11/2in x 91/2in strip between the blocks.
Sew the paired blocks together with 20
a 11/2in x 191/2in strip in between them. Sew the other two 11/2in x 191/2in strips to the top and to the bottom. Then proceed to sew the 11/2in x 211/2in strips to either side in order to finish the quilt top.
FINISHING THE QUILT
Press the backing fabric well, and trim 21
to approx 27in square. Layer the backing wrong side up, batting and quilt top wrong side down. Baste and quilt using your method of choice. Trim away excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt top to 21in square.
Sew the three 21/2in x WOF binding 22
strips end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half legthways, wrong sides together, and press. Sew the joined binding strip to the right side of the quilt, lining up raw edges. Fold over the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.
