PIECING THE TEMPLATES

Start with the Cherry Tree FPP

4

Template A. Place the Section 1A

fabric piece right side up on the unprinted side of the template, so it covers all of Section 1A plus at least ¼in all the way around (Fig 1). Pin in place, or use a dab of washable glue to secure.

Place the Section 2A fabric RST with

5

the 1A fabric. Pin along the printed line between Sections 1 and 2. Fold the fabric open to check that once sewn it will cover all of Section 2A plus at least ¼in all the way around. Adjust as necessary, and pin in place RST from the paper side.

With the printed side of the template 6

face up, sew along the line between Sections 1 and 2 (Fig 2). Fold the template back along the seam, and trim the seam allowance to ¼in, being careful not to cut the paper. Unfold the template and press the fabric pieces open (Fig 3).

Repeat the process in steps 5– 6 to 7

piece the remaining sections of the template in numerical order.

Repeat steps 4–7 to piece the Cherry 8

Tree FPP Templates B and C.

Use the Cherry Tree Half Circle

9

Template to trim each of the pieced Template A and B (Fig 4). Take care to align the edge and the marked seam allowance of the two templates.

Trim Template C along the outer 10

dashed line, then remove the paper from the back of all FPP sections. Or, if you prefer, keep the paper in place and remove once the block is complete.

PIECING THE BLOCK

Take one piece G and fold in half,

11

bringing the short edges together. Use the Background Quarter Circle template to trim away the centre (Fig 5). Take care to align the marked edge with the folded edge of fabric and the remaining straight edge with one side of the fabric rectangle. Repeat this process with the other piece G.

Take one piece G and one of your 12

pieced half circles. Finger press in half to mark the centre of each curve. Place RST, aligning the centre marks and pin. Align each end and pin, then pin along the remaining curve, easing the fabric between pins (Fig 6).

Sew along the curve, going slowly to 13

keep your stitches neat, and removing pins as you come to them. Press the white fabric away from the pieced tree.

Repeat steps 12–13 with the other 14

piece G and half circle.

Sew piece F to the top of piece D, 15

pressing the seam towards D. Then sew piece E to the bottom of D, also pressing the seam towards D in order to make the tree trunk.

Sew each of the tree units to either 16

side of the tree trunk, carefully aligning the seams at the top of each piece and pressing seams towards the tree trunk. Trim to 12in x 15½in, leaving ½in above the top of the tree.

Sew the pieced Section C to the 17

bottom of the tree, matching the seams of the tree trunk pieces. Sew piece H to the top. Trim the block to 15½in square to finish.
