MEET THE QUILTER: HENRIK M†LLER

-

We talk to Henrik about their quilting journey, quilty life lessons, Tula Pink faves and more…

How H did you first get g into quilting?

It I started with a picture p of a Super Mario M quilt I saw on the t internet. As soon as I saw it, I just had to have it. It was 2014 and I hhad no idea what a quilt was so I just assumed it was a bedcover that I could buy somewhere. I quickly learned that, in fact, I could not buy it because it was handmade – so I decided to buy an old sewing machine and finally teach myself to sew. How hard could it be? Since I had no clue about sewing, or fabric for that matter, I made it out of baby corduroy and stretchy Minky fabric (top right image). I still have that first quilt on my couch. It is a beautiful mess of wonky seams and cheap polyester batting but it is still well loved.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from quilting?

Well, quilting taught me that I actually can be patient sometimes! I am not the most patient person by a long shot. That probably has to do with my ADHD. I also struggle with completing things… but not in quilting. I am very precise, efficient and adamant about finishing projects, so I guess I found the one thing my ADHD is not a hinderance for but rather an asset in quilting. Because I can really hyper-focus on the process.

What’s your favourite thing about quilting?

Usually, the one thing I am doing at the moment. When I pick fabrics, it is the best thing in the world. Afterwards, I cut everything and it feels so meditative to me. Then comes the sewing and I never

want to stop. I have my own little assembly line whenever I am working on a project. I am very organized like that.

When did you first fall in love with Tula Pink’s fabrics?

It was when I encountered Fox Nap from the Chipper collection. I saw those little foxes and I was in love. Before that, I was only using the few woven cottons that the one fabric shop I knew had in stock

(it was not a dedicated quilt shop). Then Tula came along and changed my life. Well, and my bank account balance. Because when you start using quality quilting cotton there is no turning back.

What’s your all-time favourite Tula Pink fabric collection?

Oh, I mean, they are all gorgeous. It is hard to pick. I have favourite fabrics from most of the collections but what I can say is that there is only one collection so far in which I absolutely love every single print and that is Zuma. Honestly there is not one fabric in there that is not absolutely perfect. All killer no filler. When that collection came out, I was luckily already aware of Tula Pink and the insane secondary market so I made sure I bought proper yardage of every single print of that collection.

What is the most recent thing you’ve been working on?

The most recent thing I have been working on that I am at liberty to talk about is the Danger Noodle block for this issue's exclusive Tula Pink supplement. I really hope everybody loves the collection as much as I do and enjoys sewing the block I created!
