MAKING THE FPP SECTIONS
Foundation Paper Piece the A and B 7
templates using the dark, medium and light coloured prints as follows:
■ Template A Section 1: medium
21/2in x 31/2in.
■ Template A Section 2: light 2in x 4in.
■ Template A Section 3: dark 2in x 4in.
■ Template A Section 4 and 5: triangles
cut from background 31/2in squares.
■ Template B Section 1: medium
31/2in squares.
■ Template B Section 2: light 2in x 5in.
■ Template B Section 3: dark 2in x 5in.
■ Template B Section 4 and 5: triangles
cut from background 41/2in squares.
Starting with Template A, take the
8
medium 21/2in x 31/2in fabric piece and position the fabric on the unprinted side of your Template A with the wrong side against the paper. Make sure that it covers the whole section plus at least ¼in extra allowance all the way around. Secure it in place with a dab of glue or a pin.
Fold your paper along the line between 9
Sections 1 and 2 and trim the excess fabric to ¼in beyond the fold. Position the fabric for Section 2 RST with the first piece, ensuring it will cover the whole of Section 2 once sewn and pressed out.
Without disturbing the position
10
of the two pieces of fabric, turn Template A to the printed side and sew along the line between Sections 1 and 2.
Turn the Template A to the fabric side. 11
Press the Section 2 piece away from the Section 1 piece.
Repeat the process in steps 7–11 12
to piece the remaining sections in numerical order until all of Template A is pieced. Press well and trim along the outer dashed line, then remove the papers from the back.
Repeat steps 7–11 for Template B and 13
trim along the outer dashed line, then remove the papers from the back.
ASSEMBLING THE BAUBLE
Assemble the centre sections of 14
the individual baubles by sewing a light-coloured 2in x 51/2in rectangle to the right side of a medium coloured 31/2in x 51/2in rectangle and a dark coloured 2in x 51/2in rectangle to the left side (Fig 1).
Assemble the bauble tops by sewing 15
a light grey 1in x 2in rectangle to the right side of a medium grey 11/2in x 2in rectangle and a dark grey 1in x 2in rectangle to the left side (Fig 2).
Sew 2in x 21/2in background pieces 16
onto either end of the piece made in step 10 (Fig 3).
Sew the four sections of each bauble 17
together to finish (Fig 4).
Repeat so that you have a total 18
of twenty three baubles.
ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP
Sew the baubles and background
19
pieces into the following columns (see Quilt Layout Diagram for placement): ■ Columns 1 and 7 each contain two
baubles, one (1) 3½in x 6½in background
strip and two (2) 6½in x 251/4in strips.
■ Columns 2 and 6 each contain three baubles, two (2) 3½in x 6½in background strips and two (2) 6½in x 18in strips.
■ Columns 3 and 5 each contain four baubles, three (3) 3½in x 6½in background strips and two (2)
6½in x 103/4in strips.
■ Column 4 contains five baubles and
six (6) 3½in x 6½in background strips.
Referring to the Layout Diagram, 20
sew the seven columns together with a background 2½in x 76in strip between each column and the left and right sides.
FINISHING THE QUILT
Cut the backing fabric in half across 21
the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.
Press the quilt top and backing well. 22
Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.
Quilt as desired. Lynne quilted an all 23
over meander using a cream 40wt Aurifil thread on the front and back. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric.
Sew the binding strips together 24
end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.
Sew the binding to the right side of 25
the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
