■ One (1) 21/4in circle.

PREPARING THE LOLLIPOP

4 Sew a red and white strip together along the long edge to create a 71/2in x 3in rectangle. Alternatively, if you would like your lollipop decoration to be the same colour on both sides, then use a 71/2in x 3in single piece of fabric.

5 Fold the rectangle from step 4 in half, and stitch the raw edges of the shorter side together, leaving a 1/4in opening in the middle for the lollipop stick (Fig A).

MAKING THE LOLLIPOP

6 With the wrong side facing, fold over 1/4in on the red fabric to the wrong side and stitch a large running stitch right around the edge (Fig B).

7 Leaving the needle attached, turn the cylinder right side out, and pull the thread gently to close the opening. The fabric will gather and take on a wheel shape as you pull the thread.

8 Backstitch once and pull the needle to the inside of the cylinder to knot the thread to secure the closing. Working on the other side, fold the white fabric 1/4in to the wrong side and stitch a long running stitch around the edge.

9 Before you close this end, place the circle of card inside the cylinder to form the round shape of a lollipop. Centre the card by ensuring the front closure is in the middle (Figs C and D).

10 To add the lollipop stick, push it through the opening created in the seam in step A, then tape or glue the stick to the circle of card.

11 Once the stick is secured, pull the thread tight without breaking it to

close the back opening. Backstitch once, knot the thread and pull the needle through the fabric to hide the knot.

12 Thread the button with embroidery thread, then adhere it to the front of the opening with glue or glue dot (Fig E). Note that you can stitch the button to the front if you prefer, however, you will need to use a shorter embroidery needle for this precise placement stitching.

13 Tie the ribbon to make a neat bow. Stitch it to the front of the lollipop with two small stitches to hold it in place.

14 Use an eyelet setter to set an eyelet at the top of the lollipop. Create a hanging loop with a length of festive ribbon or coloured twine, and thread through the eyelet to finish.
