CUTTING OUT

From the white fabric cut: 1 ■

Two (2) 4½in squares (E).

■ Two (2) 4in x 4½in (F).

■ Two (2) 6½in x 3½in (G).

■ Two (2) 5in x 4in (H).

■ Two (2) 75/ 8in x 31/ 8in (J).

■ One (1) 15½in x 1¾in (K).

■ One (1) 15½in x 11/ 8in (L).

PIECING THE BLOCK

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side 2 an E square. Place RST with the A piece at one end, with the marked diagonal running across the corner.

Sew along the line, then trim ¼in from 3

the line. Press the seam towards the white corner, as shown in Fig 1.

Repeat the process in steps 2–3 at the 4

other end of the A piece (Fig 2). Then join F to either end to make the top of the tree, pressing seams towards F.

Place one G piece RST with B, so that 5

they are at a right angle to each other. Mark a 45-degree diagonal line across the corner, making sure it extends to the top right point of G. Sew, then trim and press open as before (Fig 3).

Repeat the process detailed in step 4 6

at the other end of the unit, as shown in Fig 4. Trim it down to 3½in x 15½in, carefully centring the unit. This forms the middle section of the tree.

Repeat the process in steps 4–5, 7

adding the H pieces to either end of C, then trimming to 4in x 15½in to make the bottom of the tree.

Sew J to either side of D in order

8

to form the trunk, pressing seams towards J. Sew the top, middle and bottom tree sections together in order. Then sew the trunk to the bottom. Sew K to the top and L to the bottom.

Trim to 15½in square to complete 9

the Stacked Pine Tree block.
