2½in squares.

From Fabric D cut:

■ Sixty (60) 4½in x 2½in.

MAKING THE HST UNITS

Place one Fabric A 5½in square and one 5

background fabric 5½in square RST. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the top square. Sew 1/4in from either side of the marked line, then cut along the line to separate into two HSTs. Press open and trim each HST to 4½in square.

Repeat with all the Fabric A squares for 6

a total of thirty six HSTs. Repeat again, pairing each Fabric B square with a background square for thirty six HSTs.

Arrange one of each HST with two

7

background 4½in squares in a fourpatch as shown in Fig 1. Sew them together in pairs, pressing the seams towards the background squares. Then sew the pairs together, nesting the seams, in order to make one HST unit.

MAKING THE SASHING UNITS

Sew a Fabric C 2½in square to either 8

end of each of the background fabric 4½in x 2½in rectangles (Fig 2). You will have a total of sixty sashing units.

Take two of the sashing units and join 9

with a Fabric D square in between, to make a longer sashing unit (Fig 3). Repeat this process to make a total of twenty one of these longer sashing units.

ASSEMBLING THE BLOCKS

Take two HST units and join them 10

with a sashing unit in the centre (Fig 4). Take care to turn the HST units as shown to achieve the pattern. Repeat this process with all of the HST units.

Join two pairs with a long sashing unit 11

in the centre, to make one block (Fig 5). Repeat this for a total of nine blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

Take three long sashing units and sew 12

them together with Fabric D squares in between (Fig 6). Repeat this process to make a second sashing row.

Arrange the blocks in three rows of 13

three. Join the blocks, adding a long sashing unit in between each block. Then proceed to join the block rows, adding the sashing rows in between.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

Make the backing piece by cutting the 14

yardage in half to create two lengths,

both approx 67in x WOF. Remove the selvedge from each piece and sew them together, along the long edge, using a ½in seam. Press the seam open and press the backing fabric well.

Make a quilt sandwich by laying out 15

the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top and then placing the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using basting pins, basting spray or tacking stitches.

Quilt as desired. Kathleen quilted 16

a diagonal crosshatch design created with sets of three straight lines, using Aurifil 50wt thread in Light Blush (2420).

Trim the excess batting and backing 17

fabric and square up the quilt.

Sew the binding strips together

18

end-to-end with diagonal seams. Trim away the excess and press the seam open. Fold in half, wrong sides together, and press along the full length of the combined strips.

Sew the binding to the right side of 19

the quilt, creating neat mitres at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure in sections using binding clips. Hand or machine stitch in place to finish the quilt.
