MAKING THE CUSHION PIECES
Follow steps 5–7 of the quilt
6
instructions to make a total of four Fabric A/background and four Fabric B/ background HST units. Follow the process in step 8 to make four sashing units, then join two of the units as in step 9 to make one longer sashing unit.
Assemble the units into one block, as 7
in steps 10–11 of the quilt instructions.
Baste the block with the batting and 8
lining pieces and quilt as desired. Kathleen repeated the quilt’s diagonal crosshatch design, created with sets of three straight lines, using Aurifil 50wt thread in Dove (2600). Square up the cushion top to 18½in square.
Press under one long edge of each
9
backing piece by ½in. Press under again to enclose the raw edges. Topstitch securely in place to form a hem.
ASSEMBLING AND FINISHING
With the cushion top right side down, 10
place the backing pieces on top, both right side up. Align the raw edges with the cushion, the hemmed edges overlapping in the centre. Pin or clip in place.
Sew the binding strips together 11
end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press the length of the strips.
Use the joined binding strip to finish 12
the edges of the cushion, in the same way you would finish a quilt.
