CUTTING OUT

1 From Fabric A cut:

■ Nineteen (19) 1½in x WOF.

■ Seven (7) 10¼in squares. Cut in half diagonally to make fourteen (14) triangles. You will only need thirteen.

2 From Fabric B cut:

■ Nineteen (19) 1½in x WOF.

3 From Fabric C cut:

■ Eighteen (18) 1½in x WOF.

■ Six (6) 10¼in squares. Cut in half diagonally to make twelve (12) triangles.

4 From Fabric D cut:

■ Eighteen (18) 1½in x WOF.

■ Five (5) 2½in x WOF for the binding.

5 For the FPP templates, you can use your 1½in strips as they are, trimming as you piece. Or you can cut the strips to length, using the template as a guide. Make sure to leave at least ¼in seam allowance at each end of the strips.

ASSEMBLING THE BLOCKS

6 Take one copy of the Quilt Block paper template. Place a Fabric B strip right side up against the unprinted side of the template, so that the strip will cover all of Section 1, plus at least ¼in all the way around the edge of the section. Pin the fabric strip in place.

7 Place a Fabric A strip RST with the Fabric B strip, so that when sewn and pressed open, it will cover all of Section 2, plus at least ¼in all around. Pin in place.

8 Turn the template to the printed side, and sew along the line between Sections 1 and 2. Extend your line of sewing a few stitches beyond the printed line at each end.

9 Fold the template along the stitched line and trim the seam allowance to ¼in, taking care not to cut the paper. Unfold the template and press the fabric pieces open. If using long strips, trim each strip just outside the dashed line using scissors.

10 Repeat the process detailed in steps 7–9 to piece Sections 3–25 of the template, in numerical order. Alternate the Fabric A and B strips, so that Fabric A covers the even sections and Fabric B covers the odd sections.

11 Fold the template along the diagonal line next to Section 26. Trim the seam allowance of the stripes to ¼in, taking care not to cut the paper template. Use the same process as before to add a Fabric A triangle to cover Section 26. Press well, then trim along the outer dashed line. Remove the paper from the wrong side of the block by tearing along the seam lines.

12 Repeat steps 6–11 to make a total of thirteen Fabric A/B blocks. Repeat steps 6–11 again to make a total of twelve Fabric C/D blocks, using Fabric C for the odd stripe sections and section 26 and Fabric D for the even stripe sections.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

13 Arrange the blocks in five rows of five, referring to the Layout Diagram. Alternate the blocks, and rotate as shown.

14 Sew the blocks together in rows, pressing seams in alternate directions for each row. Sew the rows together, nesting the seams between each block.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

15 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and

16 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

17 Quilt as desired. Paula quilted diagonal lines on the solid triangles, parallel to the stripes. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

18 Sew the five 2½in x WOF binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, with the wrong sides together, and press.

19 Sew the joined binding strip to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure temporarily. Hand or machine stitch in place around the edge to finish.
